Character Options Future Sonic Screwdriver Review -With pics

You guys are gonna love this :)

Probably my favourite design yet from the new Doctor Who, the Character Options Future Sonic is extremeley faithful to the original prop - no hidden pens or oversized buttons, just a very cool and pretty darn accurate replica prop with fantastic electronics at a great price.

Kinda makes we wish these guys were doing the licenced replica stuff :unsure

The FS has the usual 3 battery hidden compartment, with lights and sound triggered by a tiny press-button on the section above the acrylic rod.

Remove the front cover plate, and the internal led bar is revealed, as on the show.

Pressing the silver button under the bar switches the main emitter LED from blue to 'red setting' :thumbsup

Hold down the button for over two seconds, and the bar pulses green.

The sound is much the same as the previous releases - a little quiet, but does the job.

And the paint-job is actually pretty good :eek

The brass parts look like brass and the oxidising looks great - really matches the original prop effectiveley.

The main body could use some weathering, but that's a quibble.

The only downsides are the usual over-obvious seams, and the fact that it's made of plastic. Buy one. Buy two. This is great!

"*tap tap* It makes a noise, that's sonic."

Does the emitter extend out in a slide fashion, or was this not utilised in that episode?

Very nice though, clean up the flash and smooth it off, be a good plaything.

It didn't extend on the show. These are on sale in the UK right now, got mine a few days ago.

:confused

And to think that I was going to wait for a few months, I'll pick one up when I go uptown on Monday. Thanks for that. :D

Does this also mean that the Vortex Manipulator and Journal of impossible things is also out? Although, as I understand it, the screwdrivers that come with them have no sound or slide feature.

The Manipulator is end of month still, I think, though some seem to have appeared earlier in Australia :confused

Don't know about the journal.

Journal is supposed to be same time as the manipulator.

According to Forbidden planet, the Future Sonic is out until the end of next month... shall have to have a look around some shops.

Picked up new Argos catalog in town. They have the Future-Screwdriver, the Journal and the Vortex Manipulator. They had the Future-Screwdriver and the Journal in stock. Picked up the Journal, will unpack and take pictures.

I just got the vortex manipulator & the journal from Argos...

Disappointed :(

After the coolness of the screwdriver, the VM is basically kid-sized. The wristband is made of dark brown rubber. The watch-strap part has a crappy plastic buckle, & does not come close to fitting round my wrist.

The screen part & electronics are fairly cool, though maybe undersized as well (but too thick - obviously to fit everything in). I'm still going ahead with a full-sized leather band, and maybe my laser-cut pieces.

A fixer- upper would be to replace the watch strap part with a real one, it would at least be wearable then.

The journal would be extremeley cool, if it weren't so damned small! Loads more pages than seen on screen, but some of it is kind of hazy due to the small size and faded printing. A good start for a full size prop.

I would feel disappointment but I keep reminding myself that a) it cost under a tenner, and b) it's for children! I know if you give that to your average Who mad 10 year old they'll go bonkers in the nuts for it. As you rightly point out it's a good starting point for a full size prop. Looking at the screengrab I posted in my thread I'm pondering how many pages the book had. I 'd imagine the 78 is all there is. But how many blank pages were left in the book? I suppose a good start would be to find what was used as the base. I didn't find any of my book 'hazy', some of the print was a little faint but still perfectly legible. Perhaps there's a QC issue?

Ive just been to the drwho exhibition in cardiff and managed to get some pics of the actual prop

how do i post these on here?

Damn, they didn't have that prop when I was there in October :angry

To post pics use a free upload service like Wackychimp's (just click on the RPF banner), or I find Tinypics very good.

any update on thos pics shaunsheep?

These are in stock at jrstoyworld in the US, ill post some pics when i get mine. Im curius if the weathering is the same on them all.

very impressive toy, the detail compared to the closeup shots you see in the episodes is lime 90% accurate, really great.
