Caulk as masking fluid?

I am working on a Kylo Reforged helmet, and have dremeled out all the cracks. Can I use, like, regular latex caulk to mask the cracks before I paint?

It seems like this should work, so long as the latex holds together as I peel the caulk out after painting. Plus, the caulk will be a lot cheaper than masking fluid. But I've never tried this before, so I just wanted to make sure I was not overlooking either 1.) a reason not to use the caulk; or 2.) a better method than what I have planned.

Please and thank you.

I would not use caulking. It's meant not to come off. You can use slip latex, it's cheap and will come off.
