Casting clay sculptures

Once I finish making a clay sculpture for a prosthetic, what's the best material I can use to make a cast of it? and how much would I need?

Would be good to know more info. Is it a facial prosthetic, body, arm? What are you eventually going to be casting it in, latex, silicone, etc?

For silicone prosthetics I think fibreglass or epoxy moulds are better, you will need a core though.

After you make your mold out of what ever, fiberglass would be the best for this. Take the clay out and weigh it that is the amount of silicone you are going to need. Make sure to drill bleeder wholes in the sculpture in places where you would get bubbles, the nose, maybe a few on the neck. Make these as small as possible. You should get Neill Gorton's videos on making silicone prosthetics.

a good general rule of thumb is: hard casts are for flexible items and flexible casts are for hard items. also flexible casts need a hard outer shell to keep it from warping. smooth cast has a lot of helpful videos.
