Cardboard model, how best to finish it?

Hi

Im making something out of corrigated cardboard (much like my ironman costume) and i want to cover it to get a nice smooth (ish) finish that is solid (but not brittle), and a good base for painting.

not papermache as it will take forever! Ideally something i can brush/smooth on with a knife/squeegie.

oh, it will need to fill the holes at the ends of the cardboard as well. and the cheaper the better!

thanks!

What about auto body filler like Bondo.
Maybe lay down a coat of lacquer or resin to stiffen it first.

You could always make your model out of "For Sale" signs since they are large cheap sheets of styrene and easy to work with.
