Captain Marvel

This, a thousand times. There have been strong positive female characters for as long as there have been movies, it's nothing new.

I have to think that marketing is a big part of it, I mean I would probably push the narrative too based on bottom dollar.
We saw a bit of it with the Star Trek Discovery launch.
As if Janeway had never existed. Of course they ignore a lot of old Trek
but that's another issue.

I pity you and you're blinkered view of the world.
Why are you so threatened by a powerful woman?

This is my favorite weak argument to crush.

I love powerful women.

I love Black Widow. I love Sarah Connor, I love Princess Leia, I love Padme, I love Rey (so much so that is my daughters middle name), I love Ripley, I love Wonder Woman, I love Gamora, I love Nebula, I love Katniss Everdeen, I love Biatrix Kiddo, I love Clarice Starling, I love Hermione Granger, I love Foxy Brown, I love Alice from the RE movies, I love Hit Girl, I love Furiousa, I Love Leeloo.

Get the picture??

CM is a 6 time rebooted, D list failure who was shoe horned into this universe for no reason except to pander to fools who think she is the first powerful women to ever lead a film. It will fail.

How has Captain Marvel been rebooted 6 times? This is her debut film.

"shoe horned" into the universe she exists in and is essentially the most powerful character in.

That means the animated Justice league shows had Superman "shoe horned" into it.

So adorable.

Maybe he's referring to comic book incarnations??? She's gone through a few iterations... ya know, as opposed to the other marvel characters that have been set in stone since their inceptions. ;)

I typically go see movies that spark my interest. I'll decide whether it's good or not after I've actually seen it.

That said, I'll probably see this... Eventually. In spite of whatever it's being hyped as, it's still just another super hero film to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that. They just hold hold limited appeal for me (apart from whatever X-Force/Deadpool movies may come).

Whether it's story driven, universe building, or just serves some SJW agenda, it doesn't look like a bad film. I just have little interest in seeing it.

See, that's absolutely fair. If it doesn't engage you, it doesn't engage you. But when people decide out of hand to hate a film because of things entirely unrelated to the content of the film, that's a problem.

I hate Tom Cruise. I think he's a freaking lunatic froot loop. However, I still watch most of his movies because I enjoy them. I don't throw a tantrum and scream about how there's an assault on sane people because he's been allowed to make a movie or rail about how it'll flop because no one wants to see a movie with a spastic cult member in them. Even when there have been films of his that I didn't want to see, like the Mummy, it was because of what I was seeing in the trailers, not because of his presence.

I guess there are some people who just can't let others have nice things...

Interesting.

No official reviews released so far, usually I would have expected to see some by now, but it is understandable, given that any particular issues raised about the film by the critics will no doubt be on social media incredibly swiftly, both the positive and the negative.

If DIsney and Marvel had any sense they would just let the prebookings work for them over the weekend ,then drop the embargo Monday
.
Whatever the comments, the net result on line will be a war of words that will drive up trend interest in the film . There is nothing else to compete with CM for weeks anyway, so its going to do very well.

I watched Brie and Samuel J on the Jonathon Ross show lastnight and she did drop a big spoiler about her origin. And there is no doubt Brie is a feisty personality, (but not really any different to many movie stars) and I can see how she may cause a certain amount of resentment in some quarters.

But ,full credit to her, she certainly appears at the very least to have done a huge amount of physical hardwork to tone and strenghten herself up for the part, her gym workouts were rather gruelling. I doubt I could lift what she did.

Got to say Sam Jackson was great as ever , a proper seasoned veteran of the interview.

Arguably, this could be spin... but:

Why Captain Marvel’s Review Embargo Is Lifting So Late

Not really. The social media embargo for Captain Marvel has already lifted after screenings for junket press, and the general consensus is that it's a worthy addition to the MCU portfolio with standout performances from Larson and Mendelsohn. While these tweets obviously can't provide a full, nuanced take, it's safe to say that Marvel Studios has another hit on their hands (and definitely not a dud). The delayed lifting of the review embargo is thus unlikely to be linked to quality fears.

Indeed, the main roadblock seems to be the film's premiere schedule. Captain Marvel's premiere is on March 4 (with many press screenings around the world happening the same day). It's safe to assume that Marvel Studios wants to have the review embargo lift after that event and for as wide a spread of critics to have reviews ready for the embargo. That, of course, raises the question of why the premiere wasn't scheduled earlier, and the culprit there is the Oscars. Since the 91st Academy Awards was on February 24 in the Dolby Theatre, there's little room for the L.A. Captain Marvel premiere until next week due to the cleanup.

Thanks, some good points there I hadn't thought of. There has been a few heavily dropped hints in the UK that the film is another very strong hit, from the MCU, I assume from the recent UK screenings and Brie and Sams media/press tour and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
Despite a buncha people afraid of it (see post above), the early buzz has been nothing but positive and it's likely to be another Marvel hit.

I'm expecting a rather routine Marvel origin flick - as they all tend to be. I hope it gives me a little more than that, and I kinda expect it will. Even if it's just that generic Marvel origin, it's still well worth the price of admission and a worthy addition of the Marvel movie universe.

If it doesn't work and I don't like it, I'll post about that, too - but I'm fairly certain it won't be because how dare they push :insert conspiracy here:.

as trying to get into the SPFX make up industry, Im super excited to see the skrulls on screen. The practical make up looks really cool, so Im stoked for this fact alone. It comes out this weekend right?

YUP!

My company gives us one "personal floating holiday" each day that we can use, so I've designated Friday as "Carol Danvers Day" and took it off. I'm taking my husband to the 12:30 showing at our local theater. ;)

I was supposed to go with my gf whenever it came out(forgot the release date) but we broke up so now Ill probably have to see it alone. :(

OMG, brain twin! I have struggled with that for ages. As a person, he makes me squirm uncomfortably. But I adore (and own) most of his movies. Even ones that have other factors working against them (like Interview with the Vampire), he's so strong a performance in them it more than makes up. So frustrating. Also, see The Mummy. I wasn't gonna. Enough people I trust said it was worth watching, I snagged it on Black Friday. And now I'm sad that its lackluster box office jeopardizes any more of Universal's "Dark Universe" films getting made. Because it's much better than the trailers made it look.

That's a whole other conversation. Mis/under-marketing. Had a friend whose dad didn't realize Solo was a new Star Wars movie. From the one ad he saw, he thought it was a new video game. We are at the mercy of what the studios choose to show us, and their interpretation -- from committee meetings and focus groups -- of what they think the target audience is and what they think that target audience wants to see...

...Occasionally I think they actually guess right...? :cautious:

I was figuring, for Infinity War, that most of what we saw in the trailers was from the first act, and they would limit any glimpses of later in the film to out-of-sequence and out-of-context isolated moments. And I was pretty much right. I'm pretty sure the same holds for what we've seen of Captain Marvel so far. But with Marvel, I just make plans to go see them opening weekend. Because I haven't been let down by any yet. Even the ones with production problems like Iron Man 2 and 3 or Thor: The Dark World. I never figure I've got the whole movie sussed from watching the trailer.

And my candidate for the most mis-marketed film ever is probably The Black Hole. Disney marketed it as sci-fi, because Star Wars (and Paramount was releasing their much anticipated Star Trek movie later that same year), but didn't realize it was gothic horror. It was the Island of Doctor Moreau in space. This is why, when I watch trailers at all, I take them with much salt.
