So over the past few weeks I've been working on my Cosmo Dragoon Pistol from Space Pirate Captain Harlock.

Heres some shots of the progress thus far.

I'm planning on casting these in resin to be distributed as kits once the master is done.

Cool! I always liked the looks of this gun.
There was a licensed piece that came out a while back. I picked one up on eBay for less than $25 and did a repaint on it, but I always thought it looked/felt a little small for a "real" pistol.

That was my main complaint and the complaint of someof my friends. My girlfriend owns the licensed piece and it measures about 14.5" long if i remember correctly. Mine is scaled up to fit my large ahnds and will measure roughly 17" when completed.

I had always wanted to try building one of these up from a replica Colt Dragoon for added realisim.

I had considered modifying one of the revolvers but I just couldn't bring myself to purchase a functional firearm just to make it non-functional. I also plan on taking this one to conventions and the such with me and some of them are even getting pretty hardcore about non-firing props with moving parts.

I always liked this guy's buildup. Some of the details are simplified but I like how he made the grip and other parts. Looking on google in english will get you very few results but there's a wealth of information about the half-dozen or so kits that were produced if you look around on Google.jp

Thanks That looks fairly similar to what I'm looking to do with my kit. Personally I like th detail on the handle as an inlay rather than on the top like that but I think thats more of a personal preference thing. I cant wait to get the materials in to cast these and see what one looks like fully assembled and painted. Now its just a matter of waiting for smooth-on to ship out my order.

Inlaid is just as good, I only prefer the way his is painted/styled, it's less cheapy-cartoony looking than the popular kit version that was produced. The skull & crossbones is bigger and a little meaner while still having the same style.

You might want to check out this guy's blog, he did some pretty neat stuff with the spring-loaded breach arm.

Well, there's Denix. I got one for this purpose, but it sat waiting, as are most of my projects :lol. However, I'm going to be shooting a Civil War short, so it's just as well I never converted it. :)

They're similar but you might as well just build it from scratch at that point, the only real reason to build one up from an exsisting gun is if you had a replica of the Dragoon it was based on.

Semi-related, my rendered version i've been working on.

Working my way down to the small details now. Scale has been a bit of an issue with getting it right so far but i've adjusted it and think it's much closer.

Resin and rubber will be here on the first. Should have a display model cast and painted no later than the 12th.

FWIW, this is the Denix I picked up:

Denix makes a variety of Dragoons. Looks like this one is closer:

Neither of those are Dragoons. Off the top of my head, the bottom one is an 1851 Colt Navy.

The correct model is the 1848 Colt Dragoon, I posted a picture earlier here's another.
