Captain America: The First Avenger strategic scientific reserve pin?

I'm working on a prop set for the movie release for myself and some friends, and was thinking about manufacturing or purchasing a few sets of the pins that are worn on the Class A's seen in the various media for the movie.

Anyone have any resources on these pins?

If need be, I'm thinking about picking up some brass sheet from my local hobby lobby and using a dremel to cut them out, though I'm not sure how well the metal cutting disk will work on it.

Anyone have any input?

I've seen pins made from flat metal, and they end up looking like they were laser etched or mechanically milled. They don't have that sculpted look like coins do. There are pin manufacturers who will do that for you if you order 1,000 or 5,000 but that is more than likely out of your price range.

True-

if there was someone out there making a run of these, I'd be interested in a few sets, but I cannot realistically justify purchasing even 1k!

Judging from the attached shot- it looks like there are a few details that stand out as if they are layered.

Layer 1- Ring
Layer 2- Eagle
Layer 3- Shield

Thinking about it, I'd cut the above as seperate pieces, and perhaps create a master to make a resin copy out of? Shouldn't be terribly difficult I imagine...

Custom pins don't have to be ordered by the 1000. Back in the day there were custom Battlestar pin runs all the time at fairly low numbers. They looked good too!

Screen caps from the 2nd trailer show what I suspected- that there is a shield on the body of the eagle that is used on the pins.

I will probably start tomorrow after work on crafting these pins. I've decided that I will try a lost wax method of casting these, and will begin work by carving the master mold out of wax.

Ok, ran into a slight problem- namely that forges and the prices associated in purchasing/making one is a bit unrealistic for right now. I'm looking into some local resources- my local community college and such- for a place where I can melt down brass and pour into the molds.

Only drawback is that I don't necessarily want to take an entire class to work on just one project.

Anyone have any resources on places that can meet my needs?

Actually, reminds me more of the rank insignia for 'full-bird' Colonel.

I sculpted the pin mold, but didn't like how it turned out, so now I'm going to try carving it out.

Progress update- got most of the master carved out and almost ready to be molded.

As you can see, I have to just get the left wing carved, and the details scribed in, though I may do that with a copy first. Primarily because wood putty has been used to fix a few mistakes and wood is somewhat more challenging to work with than resin.

Since these will be resin, and I do not suspect they will hold up to being pinned through wool, I figured out that they will either use a set of small magnets to hold them in place, or a set of brooch pins set onto the backside, depending on what works better.

Initial run of the pins prove hopeful- but leave me unsatisfied with the color. I'll be stopping by my lhs tomorrow to pick up some brass metalizer paint, unless someone else has any experience with what I'm trying to do?

Ok, I retooled the process, and went and carved out pieces from stock styrene, and produced a greater result, only problem is that I'm still getting some sort of abrasion or something in the final result- its not the smooth surface i was looking for.

I haven't sanded between pouring and painting, so perhaps this is a result? I could use some guidance on this.

Pardon the lack of posting recently, I've been hard at work on some other projects.

Ideally, I'll be selling runs of these for anyone interested, either unpainted or painted. I'll post up some images later tonight as to where I'm at, but I know I've got the sculpt down- the only process I'm working on now is-as always- the paint.

Hello, I joined this site just to let you know that I would like to buy a set when you do your run. As a reenactor I already have the uniform it would be great fun to put the DI's (Distinctive Insignia) on before going to a "USO" dance and see if anyone gets it. Respectfully, metaz

I did a bunch of those BSG rank pins over on the ASAP boards (see them here) and have been considering doing these pins too. I don't want to hijack any threads or steal anyone's thunder but if GIWilly's run doesn't develop I could probably start one of my own (after I've been a forum member for 45 days)...if there's sufficient interest.

Interested depending on price.
