Hello all,

My question is can you dye a wig. I have a costume in mind but need a mens short haired wig. My better half has suggested dyeing my hair but sadly I am lacking in the frontal coverage as compared to the character I want to portray. I have done a fair bit of searching on the 'Net and have found several that could be recut into something close but I need it to be white as in an older persons hair colour. Any advise, ideas or suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance !!

You can dye any wig, but! Its not a simple process and is much better to just buy a wig already the color that you want. You can only bleach ones made with human hair, not synthetic wigs which are extruded plastic fiber and cant be bleached. My reccomendation is to buy a short white wig through ardawigs or epiccosplay. They have some short wigs that can be styled into mens hairdos.

Let me know if you have more questions! I do a lot of custom wig stuff.

questionstar,

Many thanks for the lightning fast response !!! The character I want to do is Doc Cottle from the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. Donnelly Rhodes who plays the character is bless with a rather full head of hair unlike myself.

I would like to be able to colour it to match as closely as possible but it isn't imparitive. I would also need to be able to do the part on the left side as shown above. I am almost bald from the forehead to about halfway back which is why I feel I would need the wig.

You'll need a white lacefront wig.

Theres this one on ebay. I can vouch for the seller I buy from them a lot. But you get what you pay for and they need a bit of extra work to look good.

I reccomend this one from arda
https://www.arda-wigs.com/products/cady-classic?variant=27836695430

They have shorter wigs with more hair in the back so you cant see the tracks as easily when trimmed close. And they have a few shades of pale silver to choose from which is more realistic than pure white.

Both options will still require some effort to trim and style, especially to make the hairline more realistic, but if you don't want to do that effort you may be able to pay a barber or cosmetologist to cut and style it for you. It really isnt difficult though, theres tons of youtube tutorials on how to make a lacefront wig hairline more realistic. Thats how I learned!

Thank you for the links !! As for the styling, my better half is a licenced hairdresser and my daughter has just completed her training as well so I am well set for that part.

I had initially had this wig in mind;

Skip the goatee and cutting it into something similar to what I need.

I also recommend using acrylic ink to create lowlights- I recently cut down a wig that was very yellow blonde. I used a sponge brush and extra Iso Pro to tint the roots and fetaher to the ends. I still want to add some more to make it more obvious but it's a relatively simple process once you gain confidence. It's also easy to airbrush but for me it was just easier to just sponge layer by layer.

It's hard to see but this is a lacefront and the roots are a golden tan vs the end which are super bright.

A warning though, sometimes wig styling is different to hair styling. I used a razor but also scissors used for cutting synthetics (I have several sets of scissors for sewing!)

But you do want a lace or at the least a lacefront. And make sure it's a good 2" deep to disguise the hairline.
