C-3PO ANH eye plastic re-visited

Another thread prompted me to create this one as I don't think this is commonly known.

I'm pretty sure that 3-PO's eyes did not use the diamond plastic in ANH. Only in ESB and ROTJ.
Whether or not it is clear or translucent is debatable.

Here are 3 different pics from ANH showing the smaller textured eye plastic.

Has anyone found this stuff? I'm not sure anyone even knew to look because we were all chasing down the diamond stuff that we see in exhibits etc...

If anyone finds this, let me know.

Looks like light metre material to me. Almost identical to that found on the Eumig Servomatic (Luke's ANH Macros).

I agree too. Looks like the backside of a reflector. I was even considering using that stuff since it's already about the right size and round. They have them by the sign/mailbox stuff at Lowe's.

Personally I want the ESB look for my C-3PO, but apparently no one has even found the correct material for that.
I've only seen the newer larger diamond stuff available (Prequel style).

I always thought they were the 1.5 inch bicycle reflectors you used to be able to find everywhere. I bought these years ago, most of the reflectors now have these weird faceted surfaces that won't work. These might not be exact, but I think they are pretty close.

Here's a pic Mic Davis posted of a screen used eye:

It looks like the same material to me. What do you guys think?

That's 2.3" diameter, so I imagine that the center hole would be to big, even if the outer edge was cut down.
Whatever the stuff is, it has to be transparent enough to see the 3 individual lights from behind.

The ones I used were mounted on a rearview mirror for a bicycle. There were two little 1 1/2 inch reflectors on the back. I popped them out and had to trim them down so they would fit in Russrep's eyes. I used a dremmel and slowly ground out a hole in the center of each one. I cracked a couple in the process, :cry fortunately I had a couple of spares.

EDIT: They still make them, here's the link:

Apparantly they come in all different colors now. Hope this helps!

Just ordered one.

I think they'll work for you, Gino! I hope its the right pattern, it's as close as I've been able to find. I know what a stickler for detail you are, your ANH Vader helmet amazes me everytime I look at it!:cheers Let us know what you think when you get the reflectors. When I bought mine, all I had to do was pry open the mirror and the reflectors fell right out. Careful grinding them though, they are extremely brittle! I'm still debating on which side should be turned outward, the smooth or the faceted side.

I picked up some cheap reflectors in the $1 section at Target last year. They have the same pattern, but are a little too small 1 1/4".

Lowe's carries reflectors in their sign section (garage sale signs, mailboxes etc). Clear ones are only available in a 7-pack (2 red, 2 amber, 2 blue, 1 clear). I don't remember if they are the right size though.

I think that's the one. Although I didn't notice all those criss cross dividers. Maybe they aren't as prominent in person.
Oh well, if it's wrong, it was only $10.

What about this?

It's got the diamond shape, only alot smaller.
It's actually a frosted interior car light cover i found at an auto parts store. The plastic is a little more flexable than a reflector, so they don't break as easy. I am cutting this one down, hence the center hole and circle marks. Diffuses the light quite nice too.

I think that pattern looks like the ESB/ROTJ material, but it might be too small.

SL - Nice shot of the ANH material. It's definitely a reflector of some kind and not trimmed at all (the lip edge is clearly visible).
