Buying a screen used or production made with intent to cast and sell

Do you think that it is "unethical" to buy a screen used or production made prop (paper or otherwise) with the intent to replicate it and get rid of it?

As long as the owner isn't a member here. I think that's how the rules go at least...

Everybody has a different view on what is or isn't ethical. Some things are indeed black and white, but many would say the same thing is a grey area and will have a clear conscience.

Do it if YOU feel it is right.

By any chance are you considering any BTTF props :).

nope, it's all well and good.
It's yours, you bought it.
Cast it and sell copies so that others might have one.

+1 on this.

But one has to wonder about the economics.. it would have to be a pretty well know and popular prop to get enough people interested in buying a casting, that said.. most well known props go for quite a bit of money these days.

Ah recasting, It's like burning an artists CD. You are bootlegging someone elses work. Some artists are ok with pirating. Some want you to give out the CD for free and forbid you to make money on the process, creative commons type stuff. But right now that type of thing doesn't exist in the prop world. It's a very niche market still.

But someone else designed and built it technically it's not yours to make copies of. You could be held responsible for copyright, trademark type violations.

Chances are it won't happen and it's pretty common place on here and elsewhere to make recasts.

I say make it, but if the original owner finds out and asks you to stop, respect their wishes. And know it's sometimes frowned upon on here and elsewhere and it could effect future dealings etc.

arent prety muchh all stormtrooper costumes a recast of a recast of a screen suit? i dont get why people freak out about people recasting someone elses work but find it compleatly fine to recast a screen used prop. its the same thing, i mean someone still made it. so technically your stealing the prop builders work when you recast a SU prop.
that being said, our community is based on replicating and recasting others work so it comes with the hobby i guess. i hope that made sense haha

Remember that casts of screen-used/production-made pieces do not at all have the negative connotations that you suggest on this board. If it was part of the production, at the RPF it's okay to make copies of it and sell them. If you take someone else's copies to sell though, THAT's where it becomes very not okay with these forums.

Just speaking for the RPF, not anyplace else.

Interesting feedback. Though most know of the item I have allowed to be cast, this was more of a general question.

I was thinking more along the lines of buying a screen used BTTF item, allowing it to be scanned and then having it sold.

Interesting indeed...

I agree with Nate (Slave1Pilot).

It's more common to buy it, add or subtract a detail then hold that over the head of others to satisfy your own ego, without a shread of evidence that it ever happened causing endless squabbles, bannings and general bad feelings.

Why don't you just get some screen grabs and build your own master and save the money.

It's far more satisfying.

I think the person who bought the item after you'd finished with it might be slightly disappointed if copies started showing up after they'd bought it and you didn't disclose to them that you were intending to sell copies.
