Hello prop whores,
started painting this up the other night, got some tiny little screws to add on the side and i intend to cut the panel out of his left side of his head but ill wait till i build the insert. thats if i can be bothered.

i had a bit of bother with the eyes, tried hand painting them but ended up using an airbrush. drilled out the irises too. if i can find something suitable i will fill the holes.

ive not actually watched the whole film so i dont know if he actually appears all distressed or not. i did find some pics on another forum where some folks that worked on the film had posted.(thanks)

i kinda over did it with the green/grey colour but cant be arsed fixing it.

there is a ford oyster gold rattle can base coat underneath it all.

thanks for watching:unsure

I don't recall him ever looking that weathered in the movie...

That being said, wow! That's an excellent paint job, and the corroded rust spots are convincing as heck.

It looks very screen accurate to the discarded robots he finds in the future all over the world paint-wise. Very very very well done.

I am curious, though. Why would you buy and paint a prop from a film you've never even seen?

i suppose im just a robot head collector. ive seen some bits of the film and thought it was nicely done. the props look like high quality in the film.

heres a link to a flickr page that has some production pics in it. i believe these are from a fellow member.

That was my first thought as well.:lol I have enough trouble collecting from movies I like. When I start collecting and putting time and money into props from movies I have never seen, then lock me up, at that point my collecting is out of control:wacko

But in this case - Nothing wrong with you liking robot heads - more power to you, I have never seen the movie either, never looked that good. But your replica looks fantastic, that weathering (the rust) is real impressive and is the most realistic I have seen.:thumbsup

thanks, from what ive seen the film doesnt look like a "classic" maybe a watch if theres nothing else on kinda flick (i could be wrong:unsure)- but the special effects are up there.

as soon as people see the head they know its robin williams straight away, one even said ooooh its mrs doubtfire!:angry

edit---oh yeah, i used to do model WWII tanks before props so thats where i get my rusting abilities from :)

Perfectly valid reason.

Yeah, those pics are of one of the rusted, dicarded robots sitting in junk heaps in the future. The "factory finish" is a german gold (gold with a slight silver hue to it) with subtle gold and silver accents. And I believe one of the panels on the head are translucent plastic with the german gold lightly airbrushed over it. Just watch the movie, it's actually very good. Doesn't follow the source material very well, but it's still a very enjoyable flick.

I love your paint job though. It's the perfect version to have with a disembodied head.

Chris,
This is an awesome paint job!!! I wish I had 1/2 your talent!!! Now, I still need to finish those droids, man, time flies by!!!

from what you have showed me your a perfectly capable painter. your 9-d-9 turned out better than mine , in my opinion. so dont put yourself down man:thumbsup

Back in the day there was a show called "Movie Magic" that had all kinds of behind the scenes footage of all kinds of movies. They made a big deal of this suit and it changed my life. This is what got me into vacuum-forming and prop making, I just love seeing anything from that movie. Thank you so much for sharing. Very cool.
