So where's the full size set forum? :lol

Building this for a little event coming up. Call it a ball pit for geeks. Here are some construction pics:

It measures 8' x 8' x 8'. The front lights up and the "T" light in the back will have a red panel and light up as well.

Of course, no trash compactor is complete without a Dianoga. The first one I made I gave to Steve Sansweet. So I made another. You can't see them in the photos, but it has lots of hair hanging down too. I used horse hair plucked from a Weequay mask.

This is for the 501st room at Celebration CVI. All the parts come apart and store in my shed as 8' x 4' sections. It's connected at the corners using hinges with pins that are removable.

It will be filled with trash: hoses, softer plastic parts and I HOPE some black or gray foam rubber. People will be able to get in and bury themselves in the trash for photos. I'm going to make a pipe (with accurate detailing) that people can hold up to "stop" the walls from moving in. There will be sound effects, too.

If anyone has any suggestions for where to get black or gray high density foam rubber, please let me know. I want to cut it into random shapes. No styrofoam, though. That will disintegrate.

You may have a foam dealer in your area like we do in the SF Bay.

You could email him for suggestions. He seems really geeked on foam.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't most of the trash in the film [ANH] styrofoam? I can completely understand why you don't want it though - messy stuff.

Walmart has dark gray foam floor tiles that interlock. They're in the exercise section next to the weights. You could rip several of those up into pieces.

Yes, and it was filled with water. Another detail I will be skipping for messiness reasons.

Yes, but I'm hoping to find thicker foam. 2" or bigger. Hopefully scrap since brand new retail price would cost more than all the wood and paint it took to build the set.

    Hi S,

What are your plans for the lights above the door? Didnt you create a dome panel light?

    GREAT build!

Not sure about the US, but here in Australia, it is actually cheaper to buy cloth covered mattresses and cut them up than it is to buy raw foam of the same thickness - go figure.

Styrofoam blocks could be skinned with foam otherwise.

To get a metal finish, you could brush on a few layers of liquid latex. The last layers should be with acrylic paint mixed in. This is the method used by LARP'ers for making foam weapons. Watching paint dry isn't very fun, but if you paint a bunch of foam items at once, it won't take more time than making one.

I'm looking forward to the pictures from the event!

    Thanks guys!

The dome lights are for my Death Star Gunner set I'm doing next. I recently bought a more or less accurate video control board, same brand as what was used on film. That'll be three 8'x4 sections with DS lights on either side and a video screen with a "Death Star has cleared the planet" animation I made.

If you are still looking for foam for "trash", maybe hit up Goodwill or a similar chain and see if there are any sofa cushions that are missing their sofas. Most of that foam is 4" thick or so and obviously comes in nice big pieces.

I never did post the final pictures of the set, so here are some I found online that other people took at Celebration CVI. There was a constant line of people waiting to get in and take their own reenactment photos, which is what I was hoping for. It was a lot of fun to watch.
