Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

pulled both shots into photoshop, lined them up, and applied a shadow in the appropriate areas

your dish is fine, the harsh lighting and shadows on the filming model, make it look deeper

I think another challenge here is that in nearly all of the studio shots, the near edge of the dish in each such photo is in deep shadow, making it a bit deeper to assess how tall the lip is.

Rationalization, I know... But I have to find a comfort spot somehow!

Here's the best shot I have lit like this:

Its funny though - placed in context, you can see how I was right about some of my detailing being a bit heavy-handed, especially the radials off the north pole. Not sure that I'll redo the radials though.

Brad, don't get me wrong though - super cool shot and I'm glad you whipped it up! And dude - you're gonna have to come down one weekend to help jump in on the masking and painting; especially in isolating a consistent splatter process.

I am not sure about the heavy handedness.

Remember you took this photo from amybe 4-6 feet away and the original shot was probably twice that far away with a wide angle lense. That can distort things a bit.

As for coming down and helping out. I would love it. The next 3 Saturdays are out but let me know after that!

Good point. Plus the qualitative differences between an 8.0mp digital camera versus 30-year-old 70mm film.

We're pretty open down here. Got Key West on the books 7/10 - 7/15, but otherwise open. We'll make it happen.

That's such a *****in' shot - just can't stop looking at it!

oops... my bad

you're scaling and line up is better then you think

the only thing I did to the top image was add a quick and dirty shadow

note: I did no skewing of the original death star shot, or your photo, and while they are not at exactly the same angle, the detail line up is pretty damned impressive

I agree. It's pretty damn amzing how close you got this thing without having true access to the original. I would say yours is about 97-98% accurate. Well Done.

Now just don't screw up the paint job :)

Wow, I think that photo composite pretty much says all there is to say. Very well done man!!! Can't wait to see more painting. :)

So, once you have it done, you need to vac mold it and sell some kits.LOL

I was just going to say 'wow' but that doesn't do it justice. Jawdropping. Stunning. Incredible.

And if my wife wouldn't kill me I'd be out shopping for my own.

Great work- now kick to the finish line and you'll have a masterpiece replica and the envy of the RPF faithful :)

One thing that the overlay pictures also show is that the trench is thinner then the replica... I know that you're oh so happy to notice that :eek

It could be a trick of the composit but it sure looks that way to me...

Not blasting anything just "noticing".

Its still 10000000% better then any deathstar I've got in my garage ;):thumbsup
