Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

Sorry Rob, I mean sculpting a galaxy. It's the hardcover version that I have. I had a buddy tell me his soft cover version was missing many of the pull outs. It's only a section of the DS that has the dish that is shown, but it's incorrectly labeled DSII.

Oh man, that model is looking better and better. :)

No problem - that's what I figured. I have the book, and will have to go back and look. I forgot it had pull outs.

Is yours the deluxe version with the physical add-ins?
 
Pull outs? Are you two talking about folding inserts(or pages)that have a poster like fold out design? If so,maybe I ought to check this out,and get one! Hey Rob,have you got any more masked off on the bottom,or are you taking a break? This is looking killer so far! On the page where Dan is comparing the two - I see the comparison that he's trying to make,but he's showing the Death Star from the left side(as you're looking at the dish),and showing the right side where you've painted already. The band at the top between the polar cap,and the first row under it - are wider than on the left side we see facing the laser dish. However,I see the point he's trying to make,but it is a little wide between the two,but only about five millimeters.

This would more than make up the difference required to make this look accurate enough that no one would notice. Unlike other models made for Star Wars,this one relies on paint to make all the shapes on the outer surface(of course you already knew that).:rolleyes This is a massive undertaking - I now see why most people wouldn't even attempt to start something of this nature. The shape alone is difficult enough to mask,let alone paint. The internal bracing was hard enough to figure out how to center,and mount! You make this look easy for the most part! I've made plenty of museum trips for reference photography of specific pieces for work over the years (CG models for video games), and have generally had no problems contacting the management and making arrangements for a photoshoot. I would bring one of the guys from my team to help, and bring a tripod, lights, white sheet backdrop, or whatever else was needed to do the job right.

In some cases we scheduled our shoots in the off-hours, or made a donation, and I'm sure it never hurt to drop a company or brand name. "Oh my gosh, my husband and two boys play those games together all the time! They'll be so excited to hear about this! How can we accomodate you?"

In any event, has anybody even tried to make similar arrangements with this museum? I'd bet somebody here has a contact there.

I would enjoy tagging along and helping out on a reference trip. I've got a Nikon D80, I live a few miles from Long Beach Airport, and I would be happy to pitch in on the expenses.
 
More masking today. Nothing to show; just blue tape. I'm working in, left to right, from the long rectangle just left of center on the lower dome.
 
Hey all... Got a favor to ask.

If anyone has, or is thinking about, commenting on or posting pictures of this project elsewhere on the 'net, please pay me the respect of asking me first.

I've recently learned that this project has been cited on other hobby-related sites (albeit briefly and not surprisingly), and its not really that big of a deal.

But this thread is doing just fine in garnering attention, positive or otherwise. That - combined with the unique elements of this project - makes me a little nervous.

I've said it before, and will publicly state it again - this project is solely for my personal collection, and is the only one that I will ever build.

I'd rather enjoy the build process and the ultimate results more so that worrying about "Big Brother" (or is it "Uncle"?) watching over my shoulder, and possibly turning the screws.

Please take any responses or comments to this post to PM.

I've got the big one too and that sure is the DS1... not the only thing marked incorrectly in that book. I'll snap a shot tonight but I think it is just a crop of what Rob probably has high-res already.
 
Working on the lower dome today (later). I have all the latitude lines masked off, and most of teh longitude lines of the first row done.

Today will be one of those days where I'll get frustratingly close to painting, but will likely have to close up shop just prior to the painting stage. :unsure Unless I mask really fast!

Otherwise, it will probably be Thursday before I get paint on the lower hull.

Thanks, amigo... That lower broad stripe (second in frm the left) looks a little "long in the tooth". Maybe I have the lowest row too short...?
