Building the bot: my robot project

For years I have been playing around with a project in my mind for a very long time and last year I started to take the first steps in realizing something I have wanted to do for a long time, build a prop-esque robot of my own design.

So after a lot of sketches that look like the attached...

I made some patterns in illustrator: From sketch to pattern

And today I posted an update on my blog about getting the cut plastic, and the paper model head I made to make sure the scale was correct.

I am not as skilled as some of a lot of the guys here (or as fast), but I thought I would share my first big (literally) scratch build. I am already finding out that this is worlds apart from paper props. LOL

I'm fascinated by the phrase "tell the robot's story". Do you plan on pics of him/her maybe performing tasks or maybe some arty type photos? I'm a sucker for stuff like that.

This looks like it's gonna be fun.:thumbsup

@oujala Yes! The plan is to create a series of photographs of this robot traveling around the planet doing different things. This is all about telling his story; it is about his obsession with traveling and the things he does while he is out an about. I dont know how many shots I will end up doing, I am trying not to put any restrictions on this, however I have created a site for the shots I will end up creating: Journeys of the Robot Traveler (there is no content on the site, just the site design).

@propologist It will not be 8D8, this is an original design, dont let the elongated head or pronounced brow fool you! :)

That is fantastic! I'm sure he'll take on a personality and lead you where he will.:)

Bookmarked the Journey site!

@contec The fingers will be positionable along with the rest of the body... which is becoming a bit of a challenge.

:)

There is a whole lot more to this bad boy...

@contec It looks like that is going to be my initial approach to use screws for the joints in the fingers.

I am still playing with the arms and the legs as I recently hit a bit of a bump. I was on vacation last week and while on the beach sipping pina coladas I grabbed my sketchbook and came up with a potential solution (nothing like a little liquid inspiration I guess). I am going to experiment with some of these ideas this weekend and I will report back.

Contec, do you have another suggestion besides screws? Just curious what your thoughts were on this.
