building custom flight suit - questions - harnesses?

I am currently in the process of building (or to be more accurate, preparing to build) a custom sci-fi flight suit. i have most of the materials together, i will share the build when we get there. for now, i'm looking at flight harnesses, or something like, and wondering what's available that might look a little more space-age than the leg harnesses of modern fighter pilots. a quick google search brought up these lovelies. does anyone know if these began life as something more recognizable? or were they both built for their respective movies?

Unfortunately, as a guy who wore a flight suit and harness for over 20 years in the military, "crotchless" harnesses just aren't practical. You have to have something beneath your bum to support your full hanging weight. Now, if the suit itself had an integral harness with "hidden" leg straps, that would be cool. Not sure if any exist, but good luck! Can't wait to see the progress.

no worries, i've already planned on building a "crotch" harness into the suit...my only concern was that being fastened in at the legs and waist seems crazy-dangerous when it comes to some of the maneuvering you see in sci-fi dogfight epics. besides, when it comes to google, those leg harnesses are easy and plentiful. good upper-body stuff seems to be harder to find, and full-body stuff seems nigh-impossible. thus, i was hoping integrating a harness into the torso as well would look practical as well as break up an otherwise simple upper-body design...

Mcameron, I think your second link just solved ALL THE PROBLEMS! I'm looking at the Men's Jerk Suit...crazy expensive, given what else I'm working with, but right on the money for design! I'll have to see if I can build something like it...

I'm not sure whether you want a flight harness for inside a cockpit or a external harness a la hangliding etc. I'm assuming the latter.

Maybe take a look at Yves Rossy's wing harness.

The Gryphon (hard)wingsuit might be good also.

The Rocketeer rocketpack harness is a classic style design, but I'm sure you could give it a revamp if you remade it in Gore-tex and used parachute harness buckles. The twist release ones you find in gliders would be a good option.

I'd look for a second hand skydiving harness.
Some of the really older setups are usually sold for little to no money and by cutting the container part of the back, you end up with quite a nice setup that you can build op (and choose with or without leg straps)
