Building a child-scaled TARDIS for my son's birthday party..... advice? **WIP**

So my soon-to-be 8 yr. old wants a Doctor Who party for his birthday in 3 weeks. (This is the son who was in the RPF costume contest here ) I've been trying to come up with a way to make his party really stand out and be fun, and I've decided to try and make a TARDIS for him and his friends to play in, scaled down to their height. However, I need help!! I'm not a big fan myself (Harry Potter is much more my thing! lol) and I'm basically putting this idea together from scratch.

After doing some research, I think I'm going to try and make it out of foam core or insulation, so that I can carve into it and get a better shape. I don't want to go the whole cardboard box and paint routine, because that offends the crafter in me! I'm going to try and use pictures to get accurate measurements and then scale it down to his height... And I want it to be a full box, not just a front.

Any thoughts or suggestions from others who have taken this on?

Lucky kiddo!! If it's actually going to get played in and be more than decorative I think you should consider building the basic frame and walls out of lumber and smooth mdf (easy to paint and won't have a grain like plywood), just so it's strong enough and has enough weight not to get bumped around. Especially if you want to have a functional door on it. You could use the foam board on top of that to build up the trims, panels and stuff.
