Build support software question to guys with makerbots or similar

The software I have seen makes really heavy build supports that strikes me as wasteful and tough to remove particularly if you have a hollow object.

So for you guys who have makerbots or comparable what software do you use for the support material?

Thanks.

I use cura. in the advanced settings you can alter the amount of support. It has lots of features and is very adaptable.

What software do you use?

I have used a lot of the higher end SLA machines that are twice the size of a soda vending machine so I really don't know the softwares for the smaller consumer units. I know some are proprietary and only suited to one machine.

Can Cura be used on any machine?
