BSG National Geographic ~Work in Progress~

I know a fellow member has already created one of these, but he seems to want to hold on to it for himself - which is fine and completely within his rights.

But since myself and several other members have expressed interest in one of these, I am in the slow process of replicating one for us all to be downloaded here free when done.

Here is where I stand so far:

If anyone has a lead on the skull on the cover, please let me know.

Thanks,
Sean

IIRC, National Geographic's in-house art department did the magazine themselves. The skull is no doubt from their own internal database and tricky to find.
Getty has some National Geographic images available, but not this exact skull. They have one very similar (same green background just a different skull) probably from the same photo shoot:

have though about just ever asking NG about the image ? sounds crazy but just asking and explaining what your doing might get you a clean copy.

LOL! I've been trying to work on this one for a while. I'm waiting for a user who took a photo I found at Flickr of the actual prop and remove the flash that the camera took when taking the picture (the other pictures taken by the user didn't have the flash, but were blurry). It's been a while since I last heard from them, though.

They're not going to give it away especially when you plan to infringe on their copyright with it. They sell images on their website with limited usage rights.

Thanks all for the links. I have added the temp skull for now and I have updated the font.

I have sent an e-mail to the photographer og the temp skull to see if he has any leads.

Hi-res photos of the original prop:

The first one might be good enough to clean up the skull.
Flickr is always great for this kind of stuff. You can find lots of fan pics of BSG (or SW) props that have been on display.

That second link happens to be the very picture I was talking about. deck5 has been working on trying to get the image cleared up of the flash on the second one for me.

And JD, it could be possible the picture used on the cover isn't Garrett's work. It could be possible that the props department made the skull and that was photographed in the same style (they probably got in contact with Garrett before making it, to see if he was okay with making a picture of a similar likeness).

Sorry - I had umpteen things going at once.

I just received an e-mail back from Ken Garrett stating:

"Yes the photos are mine, how were you thinking to use them. I can send you hi res from my web site."

I sent him a reply and now we shall wait.

OMG! I wish you the best of luck, man! And I hope the same can be done for the rest of us here. :D

As I said in the first post, when this is done, it will be free for all to download. I just hope he wasn't mistaken about the BSG photo, thinking it was his but when it only looked similar...

Fingers crossed.

Cool. I've already got an old issue of National Geographic that I plan on placing the cover on (don't know about the replica of the actual article, but even so, having the cover is good enough to me).

Then there's the issue of the text on the inside of the mag differing from what was spoken on the show... which do you go for?

Any idea's of how to get a print of this? I don't think my crappy ink jet would do it justice and Kinko's won't touch something like this.
