Bringing an old styrene kit to life

After staring at this thing for the many years I have had it, I decided tonight that it was time to go nuts on it. I have been itching to build a styrene kit for a while now, and I figured this will be a great challenge.

It will involve a test of all my skills, from airbrushing to casting to sculpting.

Here is what I have done in just one night.

Here is what I started with around dinner time. Since it's a snap kit, It is a snap to take apart... i'm just that funny.

I started to carefully remove the doors using the thread technique. It took me nearly an hour to remove each door.

Fast forward about 3 hours, and after a little cleanup, a few cigarettes, and a coffee... and I was ready to mock it up for a little inspration.

I took it all apart after that and laid up clay on the door interiors so I can start sculpting a whole new interior tomorrow.

While the body is in shambles, I wanted to try this chrome foil I have seen on the shelves at the hobby store.

Needles to say... the results from only tinkering with it a little are amazing. I did the trim around the fin freehand with a razor. All of this is stripped off now, and the fins are damned to the sand and primer treatment shortly.

Note the airbrushed silver on the fin sitting next to the car. Never again... chrome foil is my new mistress.

Whoa! Nice build... and off to a great start. Hey at least you got your snap kit finished. Mine is literally sitting in the box under my finished AMT Ecto 1A.

That old AMT kit might be a great donor for this one... it had a clear window for the back, and a more detailed rear interior as well. I always thought tinting the clear back window but leaving it off the 'stripe' in the middle would really sell this thing.

:thumbsup

Looking good, Although I do wanna say that the back doors swing open
the other way. Like suicide doors. Hinged at the back, not to front.

Can't wait to see more on this.

Thanks everyone. It's a slow process, but it's going to be well worth it in the end.

And I disagree :love

While that is not the real Ecto1, it is the same model

That's the newly restored scren used Sony Ecto-1 pictured at Best Buys headquarters. She was pulled out of Sony's back lot along with the 1-A and sent for complete restoration just under a year ago. The 1-A is still undergoing restoration while the original Ecto is touring the US promoting the upcoming Ghostbusters game and anniversary.

This car pictured here is not to be confused with the recently restored Universal Ecto-1, which while almost bang on accurate, wasn't used on screen like this old girl. The Universal car is now privately owned. Yea I know too much about these cars haha.

And, you are correct. Some of the pictures I have seen had the door opening the other way but it turns out it wasn't the correct year car.
It was a replica someone did on a different year. My bad!

My apologies.
I've not been to Sony in over a year & thought it was still there rotting away.
