Bondo-Glass???

Hey guys, just a quick question. I'm new at this fiberglass business and was wondering if I wanted to make a flat sheet kinda like a sign, with the dimensions around 30" x 30", would Bondo-Glass be fine?

It has the fibers already, I just didn't know if I would really need the cloth.

Just for wall display purposes.

Thanks for any help!!

I would think you are still going to want the glass fibers. You will need some kind of substrate at any rate. Bondo-Glass alone will be fairly brittle.

Cheers,
JM

For flat sheets I see no reason to use body filler (Bondo)...

For a flat sheet of fiberglass, get a sheet of laminate counter top (Formica) lay it flat on a table, spray it with 3 fine coats of PVA release, OR wax it 3-5 times with a good carnauba wax, OR lay a sheet of heavy grade painters plastic down on top of it...

Take the fiberglass resin, roll or brush it out, lay a sheet of fiberglass mat/cloth down and wet it out with either a roller or brush, lay another sheet of mat/cloth, repeat until the desired thickness... Then take another sheet of the heavy painters plastic lay it over he layup and take a rolling pin and squish out any excess to the sides, leave the plastic sandwich like that to dry... Once dry the plastic sheet will peel off and you will have a crisp flat sheet of fiberglass with a high fabric to resin content...

If you desire a clean surface for the first layer use gelcoat and let it mostly dry before layering up the fabrics...

As for body filler with fiberglass, it's OK and might serve your purpose but it's not a replacement for traditional layups...
