Either way would be good, I've not tried the cardboard templates, so can't really comment on them. If you ever in need of advice don't hesitate to ask, whether it be me or not, plenty of helpful people here and on DH.

Is he part of the costume?:lol On a more serious side your helmet is pretty impressive from what it once was. Maybe put a little wheel for the little guy in the back of your jetpack to power your jetpack beacon?

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

question time

if i was to pour my silicone into this now and attempt to mould it would it be okay, or are there problems with it im not aware of (since this is my first time :confused)

i've got my release agent to spray onto it prior to pouring my silicone in, its base is styrene, i figured it was a nice clean flat surface to use. the walls are just wood hot glued into place, thats all i can think to explain, the ear cap isn't glue down yet but i will do that prior to the moulding (obviously)

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

Hi rosskow

Wood is ok to use as long as it is sealed properly (made non pourus). Otherwise the wood will absorb the silicone to an extent and it might adhere enough to tear the mould when trying to seperate it.

A quick fix in this case, is to use a white spirit/vasaline mix and let the wood suck that up first, then brush on a light coat of unmixed vasaline (or wax release) on top of that and you should be good to go :thumbsup.

As I said, it's a quick fix as the setup is already prepared, usually the master parts are primered and/or painted with a gloss coat (the shinier the better).

Good luck

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

This is an amazing thread, just finished reading the entire thing. I really picked up a lot of great information here that I hope to apply to my first pep. Keep up the amazing work!

Thanks for the help on that, I was meaning to ask whether to primer the styrene, I'll just leaveit for now though.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

well.... first time moulder, first time failure

i didnt mix up enough silicone so i only have (barely) half the amount covering my ear cap than i wanted.

the proof is in the pudding below
20120803_194735.jpg

20120803_194755.jpg

almost got mad bubbles, dont know how it will turn out. i think it was because i mixed the silicone up too fast, it wasn't from pouring it, i spent about 20 minutes slowing pouring it in, i mixed it as though i was making an omlette so i ended up getting lots of air into it (lesson learnt, go slow mixing, less of a wip)

apart from all those problems and issues it all went peachy. that'll be left for 24 hr now before i carefully try to demould it.

meanwhile... i'll correct some minor issues with my bucket tomorrow.

edit: almost it hasn't leveled out properly yet, least i learnt alot from this, thats all i can take from this.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

Hi rosskow

I had the same problem a little while back, as long as you use the same type of silicone, and pour the next layer within 48hrs it will bond really well to the cured layer.

Mould incomplete

I couldn't find the join at all after a close inspection :thumbsup

And the first pull came out great

Not sure of I can help with the bubbles though. It all depends on whether there are any resting on the master, if there are, then you might have some sanding to do, or of your budget allows, a second attempt.

Pour the silicone slowly in a thin stream from a few feet above the mould. This will break up the bubbles as the stream of silicone isn't wide enough to support the larger ones of concern.

If you think you might be using silicone more often, look up DIY degassing chambers or PM me (I ran a thread on building 12" x 12" one for under £300 including vacuum pump - try and find one that size for under £400 just for the chamber alone, and I'll buy you a drink).

Sorry to hear that about your first mold ross, but let's hope it comes out okay!

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

I did exactly that when pouring, it was as once as I mixed it, it looked like a blue muffin the amount of air and bubbles in it.

Thank you for the tip, I might go add some more to it now try to salvage it.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

You should be good I done it before come up short ,mix some more and pour it on top silicone sticks to silicone. Your build inspired me to start my own bucket will start bondoing mine tonight.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

Thanks Ray, always nice to hear that, just hope I can keep you from making same mistakes as I did and there were plenty of them.

Right, as for my mould I just finished pouring on more silicone, give it a but more body and strength, might be able get a half okay cast from it.
Might end up redoing it though since im fairly certain it wont meet my approval as it's only my first attempt.

More to come tomorrow, hopeful.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

Man oh man I am so excited for you. I've been dying to learn more about the molding process.

So the photo you had on the other page showed the liquid stuff you bought to make the mold...

it didnt look like you used up too much of it for this piece... do you think you will have enough to do the entire bucket?

friggin cool man. I'm excited for ya.

On a side note I flew my coworker from Manchester down to Tennessee with me this week for work with a client and we had some lengthy discussions about Football over a few pints.

thanks alot magneto, i was excited but very nervous myself, in answer to your question though, no, i wont have enough to do my whole bucket but its given me an idea how much i will need though, ALOT.
ive just finished pouring my second and third moulds, little less bubbly
20120804_141915.jpg

just took a snap to show my set up, its more of a patch work than my first one, but it worked alright
i only have a small, very small amount of silicone left now, i'll be needing more to make my last mould of my final ear cap, but i'll leave that for time being once i find out how my current ones work out.

on a side note magneto, despite being a Brit', im not a football fan, now NHL, thats a sport.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

DAM RIGHT.

:)

i've never been so nervous...

20120804_212531.jpg

i dont know whether i should of left the gap out and then i could of just did it on the casts i pull, too late now though...:facepalm
caused all kinds of problems getting out the master.
20120804_212804.jpg

eventually got there
20120804_213520.jpg

20120804_213540.jpg

roughly trimmed it, bit worried about trimming it too much and pulling away something important, any tips on trimming it would be a massive help.

tomorrow, remove my other two moulds and maybe attempt a pull on my first mould.

things (still) to do:
-accurate dent, no idea how im going to do that though...
-some dents to fill in on the dome and smooth out
-fix curve on the the right cheek

i see an end in sight, but its still seems a fair distance away.

ALSO, any tips on cleaning out my mould before i try to cast it, the silicone just hangs on to any bits of dirt or dust that comes within 5 foot of it
