Hey guys,

So not to derail the current conversiin threads going on, i thought id start this up.

Who thinks that the large Falcon that Hasbro just released is able to be converted without primering first ? By this i mean that the original color of the ship can be retained for the most part, just adding the dirt, grime etc that the Falcon has. I know the plastic isnt ideal but is there something that will work and adhere to the plastic finish??

Would be good to hear some opinions :)

I played with painting mine a little bit before using any adhesion aid or primer and it simply didn't work. The paint would come off with the slightest effort and wouldn't pass the painter's tape test. Granted I just tried it with regular rattle can paint and didn't seal it, so there might be some type of paint out there that would work but it's still probably not ideal.

I don't think you will find too many on here that would just paint the details without painting the whole ship first. If your going to spend the time detailing the ship with paint, what not just paint the whole thing?

I dunno. Not being an expert, it seems to me if the paint that he's laying down isn't actually adhering to anything that's really stuck to the plastic (and it sounds like it's not), as the plastic flexes (which it likely will) then whole sections are potentially going to bubble and eventually lift away in large flakes. At fifty pounds all-in, I have this cynical little voice that says he's just hoping it will last long enough to get outside of Paypal's statute of limitations before the paint-job falls apart. But again, I'm cynical.

BINGO! I could have painted mine without any prep and It would have looked great until the first time I tried to touch it. This plastic needs to be cleaned, etched and primed. Other wise you are just wasting your time.

-Lee- its simple to just wash it with a Scotch Brite pad in the bath tub and some sort of de greaser, a quick coat of adhesion promoter and quality primer. 3 easy steps.

With that said, the Ebay guy could have done all the steps I mentioned.........and painted it in an hour using the supplied stickers. If it looks good to you then blaze on my friend....thats all that matters.

As a test I used Rustoleum automotive primer on the inside of mine. It stuck with no difficulty... and I painted in at about 60F temp (usually a big no-no under 70F) but it adhered and would not even come off when scratched with my fingernail. it did leave a mark but did not come off.

I'm not that impressed with that ebay paint up, its so easy to overdo the panel lines.
I don't see so much of that on the real thing, and I wonder if he got the £125 for it?

He has one on just now, over 200. The airbrush work makes it looks like its out of focus, not a great job imho

Problem I see it that it still retains its toyish look.when you have one its your property so do what you like.but if you wanna do it right its better to go all out and improve the toy and make it more believable.total dismantle and improvement where necessary.a toy like this at this size is asking for it and lighting.

so complete restrip with correct stripper, prime, preshade, color coats and weather is realy correct.

Thanks for the responses guys.Browsing Ebay and found this:

Now that doesnt look bad for a custom paintjob and i think it looks excellent. I asked the guy how he paints them and he doesnt use any primer, just fine layers of airbrushing which is then sealed.

Nifty looking paintjob me thinks :)
