Blue Thunder: Frank Murphy project (research phase; help wanted)

I have loved Blue Thunder (the movie and the helicopter) since I first saw its theatrical release. And apropos of nothing, it came to me in a flash the other day: Frank Murphy’s uniform!

I’ve searched the board and have found no evidence that anyone here has done Frank Murphy’s Astro Division flight suit and helmet. Or if they have, they didn’t advertise it. Obviously I could just buy a flight suit and a helmet and try to fake it, but I’m sure you’re all familiar with the concept of “not good enough.”

I’ve been poring over the DVD (haven’t upgraded to Blu-ray yet) and searching the Internutz and so far the only item I have ID'd 100% is the watch (Casio AA-85 w/brown alligator band). That’s gonna be spendy right there, if I can even find one I can afford, so I’m considering similar Casio models. The big question is, of course, how much do I want to spend to get it right?

Stand by for full geek-out...

The Astro Division is fictional so I’ll have to commission replica patches, unless someone knows of a source. They're based on the LAPD Air Support Division patch. The “Metropolitan Police” badge should be pretty easy; I just need to ID the lettering and decide whether to go with all silver or with gold banners (appears to vary between scenes). The pilot wings appear to be standard US Air Force, silver, although the shield looks gold in some scenes.

I believe the Astro flight helmets are Gentex HGU-84/P models; I found a listing on Craigslist and aside from the liner color, it looks spot on. I just haven’t found one available with the gray liner yet. (The more I look, the more I think helicopter helmets are a mix-and-match type of deal, with few standard combinations.)

Blue Thunder’s fire-control helmet is most cool, but Murphy never wore it with his flight suit, only with his “regular guy” clothes: slacks, dress shirt and green corduroy jacket. (What are the rules about mixing and matching, anyway?) Still, it seems that using this helmet would sell the costume much better than the plain gray Astro helmet. (“Um...so you’re, like, a police helicopter pilot?”) It appears to be an HGU-84 with a flat black paint job, cable connector box and PRU-36/P dual visor housing. (If anyone knows different, please chime in.)

Finally (yeah, right), sunglasses. Aviator style, black frames, transitional lenses. As we used to say when I was a kid: “Cinchy.”

But it’s not worth worrying about the little details unless and until I get the biggest part of the uniform right: the flight suit.

Murphy’s flight suit is different from the other pilots’ standard gray suits, not only in color but in style: It’s not quite navy blue, looks up-close almost like a lightweight denim (brushed cotton twill? I don’t know fabrics), and has light gray stitching. It’s fitted at the waist and has an integral belt, almost like modified mechanics’ coveralls from Sears (like my uncle used to wear). I’m not nearly as trim (or short) as Roy Scheider was, but I can pull it off. Zip front with long sleeves, always rolled up. What’s interesting is that it appears to be previously used (and therefore faded), as there’s a darker rectangle on the right chest where he wears his standard LAPD uniform nameplate (as well as a stitched repair to the right sleeve). He wears another version of the same suit after he crashes the Jet Ranger and gets the left sleeve cut off; this other suit has the darker rectangle on the chest as well as dark spots on the sleeves where patches were removed—patches that were the same shape as the Astro Division patches (which are the same size and shape as standard LAPD patches). All of which leads me to believe that they sourced some actual police flight suits for Murphy.

I’ve been looking intently for a couple of days to no avail. If I have to have something made from scratch or heavily modified, any recommendations on where to go?

So there’s where I am. I would appreciate any pointers, tips, IDs, etc. you can offer. Thanks in advance.

One final question: Once I get this thing together, where the hell am I going to wear it? :)

I loved Blue Thunder movie and tv show. When it was on I actually called my dad's car Blue THunder (which I later inherited as my 1st car :)

Good luck, it looks like a fun costume!

Give these guys a call: http://www.gibson-barnes.com/Home/id/17/

They make more flight suits than anybody out there, and they're extremely knowledgeable. I bought my custom horse hide A2 flight jacket from them many years ago and it is awesome. I'm sure somebody on their staff either has first-hand knowledge of Frank Murphy's flight suits, or can point you in the right direction. Good luck!

Nice to see some love for my favourite movie also - only paralelled by my love of the chopper...!

So - I probably have plenty of picture reference for you flight-suit-wise. Its good that you've examined the costume closely for the idiosyncrases (like the ageing) but did you notice the repaired tear in the top of the right arm? This proves that Scheider's suit was worn by Dana Carvey for the TV show. They simply changed over the patches. Scheider's olive jacket appears in numerous episodes also.

There is also some evidence of the Harrison Control Helmet worn with the flightsuit also for publicity purposes;

As far as I know no decent patch (nor graphic) of the Astro Division patch exists so you'll need help rendering one from screengrabs - its hardly the most complex of designs so I'm sure somebody could do it.

As for the Casio - you are correct about the model being the AA-85 - there were many similar cases using the same 101 module but accept no substitutes. Regardless of its association with the film its one of the most coveted digital watches amongst collectors and my grail prop. I'm almost there as I have a screen-matching lizardskin band (and you think finding the watch is hard..!) and the moss green army surplus sweatband. my watch is good (probably even in the condition the original is by now) but I'm still searching for a cleaner example.

I wish you luck with it and may well be in the market for one myself...!

@DS, thanks. I've been looking at the site and I'll give them a try.

@GELForever, awesome shots! Thanks.

I noticed the repair, but I'll take your word on the Dana Carvey connection. I recently watched the first episode of the BT TV show on DVD and that's all I could stomach. I just bought the BT Blu-ray and I'm looking forward to digital bliss. :)

Yep, already have my eye on it. :)

Fortunately, I have no deadline. Still, I wish I'd started looking for a watch back in the 80s. :cry

One lucky fan has a great example of the AA-85:

Well, that watch went for $339, and it wasn't in very good shape. I guess I won't have the *perfect* Murphy costume until I win the lottery.

That's a staggering amount for one in that kind of condition. What you see with that is what you get, also as there can be little restoration done (believe me I've tried) to get it back to new. Here's a quick snap of mine;

And though in the main I'm happy and love the strap and sweatband, I have to tell myself it would pass as the original prop would look today...

I'm envious.

An aside: I watched the Blu-ray this weekend and it was glorious. :) No way to get grabs yet, though. What's baffling is that some of the music cues are different from the DVD, and they completely cut Cochrane's line when he lifts off from the pad against orders to go after Murphy. ("Thank you!")

Why would they do that? Whyyyyy???? :confused

I picked up a Casio A-201 for a reasonable price (it was in Asia so the shipping was exorbitant). It has the 103 module like the AA-85. Obviously it's not the Grail, but it's something to start with.

Everything I could have said about the Murphy costume has already been said, I think. The shoulder patches are based on an actual LAPD Aerial Support patche- they are silver grey with black lettering (ASTRODIVISION POLICE) and trim and yellow emblem in the middle, the emblem is a two-bladed rotor with wings either side. Notice that they never refer to the 'Los Angeles Police Department' in the film because they were asked not to by the LAPD.

And for the absolutely authentic outfit, he never wore the Harrison Fire Control Helemt with his blue flightsuit- even the 'generic' (it's blatantly Roy Scheider) "Astro Division Pilot" figure that came with the Blue Thunder toy had a white helmet (though the back half was painted blue) and blue flightsuit combo.

A while ago I picked up a couple of pieces from the estate of Mickey S Michaels, Set Decorator on the film and the guy who designed the helicopter. Got a press kit with all the photos in it, a folder with diagrams of the 'copter etc (interestingly features a photo of Roy wearing the HFCH, it's a dark shot lit with red light and the helmet has a green-lit circular targeting monocle which it doesn't have in the movie), but the most interesting part for me was a pair of shoulder patches from the TV series. I will not say screen-used because I am certain they were simply spares that never got attached to any of the costumes but they are 100% genuine. This becomes blatantly obvious when compared to ANY of the commercially available versions of it that are floating around, which are obviously rough guesses made from stills before the DVD release and are so horrible by comparison it's not even funny. The actual one features metallic thread and is GORGEOUS. Sadly I now only have one, the other mysteriously vanished from where I was keeping it. I'll try and get a good pic of it up at some point.

Two items I missed out on from that estate sale were a full size poster (it was shipped out to me but got lost) and one item which has bugged me ever since; the seller told me she had "a lighter shaped like the helicopter"; when I got back to her, she told me that she'd figured out it wasn't actually from Blue Thunder and had sold it on anyway. I thought nothing more of it...until the next time I watched the movie and suddenly noticed what Icelan lights his cigar with in Braddock's office, and ever since that day I have been wondering....

I feel your pain and then some. Somewhere down the line, Channel 5 in the UK decided that Blue Thunder would be the perfect family afternoon action movie...if it wasn't for all the swearing etc. So every time they show Blue Thunder, it's cut to shreds. Not a big deal I suppose if you own the DVD but if it's on TV and you haven't seen it in a while...

Thanks to a close personal connection, I got to fly with LAPD Air Support last year. There is a plaque in the hallway at Piper Tech from Columbia Pictures thanking LAPD for their help on the movie. I'm trying to get back up there to take some pictures.

Notice that they never refer to the 'Los Angeles Police Department' in the film because they were asked not to by the LAPD.

The script is amusing, because almost everywhere it used to say "LAPD," someone corrected and typed "Metro" over it. Man, that brings back memories of pre-computer term papers. :)

If that was the AA-85 I would pay that money no problem. But it ain't so I won't. There are TWO genuine ones on the same site at the moment in reasonable condition...

Forget stocks. When I get my time machine, I'm going back to the 80s and bringing back a case of AA-85s. :)

Just a note re: Astro Division being fictional. ASTRO was an actual title that LAPD Air Support Div. used. It is an acronym that stands for "AIR SUPPORT TO REGULAR OPERATIONS". Also of note is the LAPD radio dispatcher in the Blue Thunder movie is none other than Shaaron Claridge. She did the radio dispatch voice overs on Dragnet and Adam-12, and was a real LAPD RTO.

That's really interesting- in the doc's on the Blu-ray they casually mention ASTRO simply as a generic name so as not to confuse it with the real LAPD.
And speaking of the Blu-ray- same as the post above- though it's gorgeous to look at- what the HELL went on in the sound remastering I don't understand. The music towards the end is all over the show and dropping Cochrane's line is so unforgivable you end up saying it yourself!!

Back on topic though- any movement with this project? Still looking for the perfect AA-85 myself...

Sorry, no movement on the jumpsuit. Another in a long line of almost-started projects...

In addition to the aforementioned sister watch, I did get a pair of aviator wings and an LAPD-style Metropolitan Police badge in gold (with "George Kennedy" struck into the back for some reason), but it's the wrong shape. My eBay email alert for the watch is still active, but I haven't seen a watch in months.
