Black/Red Nike Mag Project

I soldered the 3v AA inverter to the v2 switch but didn't work, it's because te switch on the inverter is conflicting with the v2 switch IMO but I can't clarify what's going wrong..

I really need to solder the v2 switch and inverter switch together to see if that works.

Cavx, I found this.. I think this is the stuff right?

That looks like it :)

Awesome thank you for checking mate, I appreciate it :)

That's it ordered :D

I did some prep tonight for the second attempt(photo below), I don't know if the Sellotape will work but I know that it won't have a pattern and that's where I will know where the "cut off" line is.

Currently I am making super sized ice cubes(photo below) to help in applying the silicone smoother and more level, not sure how this will turn out but should be posting pics of the 3rd attempt in the next 2-3 days.

Oh my first attempt I cut up a little and roughly wanted to see how the red el panel looks under the silicone.

looking fantastic

let us know how you get on with the second attempt. are you going to go for a more thicker coat of silicone this time?
i think the rubber soles are about 2mm aren't they?

if you get the silicone to a good thickness, let us know how strong it is, ie tear strength by hand. if it holds up, then its perfect material.

that first attempt looks brilliant.

hopefully, clear silicone should have a decent shore hardness to it once hardened. i hope so!

if this works, it will be a fantastic money saver!

Ye it looks not bad, still a while to go yet till i perfect this and trust me i won't stop till i do lol.

The silicone is very stretchy and tough, very happy with this to be honest.

I ordered the pyramid mat (cost me £23.99 in the end!!!):eek

However as these will take like 10 mins to do in the end i will be able to do this for members who are using the kmag soles, keep you posted all the way though with my progress.

Tonight i will apply a second coat of silicone to get it up to around the 2mm thickness mark.

WOW that imprint looks very good. Look forward to seeing how you go with the pyramid mat. Yeah that stuff is not cheap. I would have to check the local prices here again because I need more myself. Silicone is cheap at least :) And I think that provided you can keep it dust free whilst curing, you should be able to simply add more too it to build it up. You could place it in a container and cover it with glad wrap or similar whilst it cures.

Thanks Cavx, but it's you I need to thank! Your suggestion has made this possible :)

I hope I can get good soles made as I would be happy to send you a pair for free for making this possible, will keep you posted when the pyramid mat arrives, starting to think I need a "square pattern" mat now aswell though as I can't perfect the square pattern using the soles as a template, I need overhang/excess rubber to make a cleaner mold.

"Goes back to searching" ....

Mat arrived, really need to find this square pattern mat now.

Oh I have decided to not use the bathroom silicone stuff as I'm just not getting the finish I want from it unfortunately, I have tried so many times with all sorts of pouring methods.

I have now decided to use the below silicone if i cant get the similar type of stuff ordered through work for free as it is a bit pricey if anything doesnt work out..

That mat looks a little different to mine, but should still give the end result. Is this new type of silicone harder?

It's about the same, strong qualities but alot more "bendy"

The company who's link I supplied in my last post was very accommodating on the phone, I explained what I was making and they told me this is the best stuff for the job(that they supply)

He told me when applying:-

1.set mat out.
2.barrier off the sides(like a wall all the way round)
3.mix silicone and catalyst correctly.
4.pour into a new pot therefore removing the unmixed catalyst from the sides of original pot.
5.pour mixed silicone from new pot into the corner of the mat so it builds up and builds up, it then spreads across the whole area but will make sure no air bubbles are created from pouring.
6. Leave to set (for stated desired time)
7. Remove the silicone when it has done its "cure time" carefully.
8.place on existing k-Mag rubber sole.
9.trace out on new silicone the shape.
10.cut out new silicone shape.
11. Use hair dryer to bend the sides to the shape required for the curvature of the sides.
12.apply to midsole and glue it down.

I hope it goes to plan... :confused

I hope so too. The reason I was attacted to bathroom silicone was because -

A. It is already mixed and ready to use and
B It is cheap :)

OK, your actually mixing product. So why not just go with clear elastomer like I did on my clear soles? You can then select a shore hardness.

My idea for silicone was only for the sides, not the soles themselves. I mean the stuff is soft and grips really well, even on wet tiles, but I don't think it would stand up to wear on the sole base.

Ye I'm just playing about with different silicone at the moment, whatever one works out at the end of the day will be the stuff I use.

I have been thinking long term about my black mags and I honestly think although I want them wearable I will just have them on show, unless its like a special event I doubt I will wear these out especially in Scotland, our weather is so unpredictable.. One minute it can rain next it can be sunny then it could snow out of no where, don't get me wrong I'd love to wear them 24/7 but I think I'll just destroy them within notime, so the underneath sole area I don't really mind how well it holds out but I think it's going to be just dandy on carpet Ect, which means they will hopefully be fine for indoor use. I will never wear them where there isn't a roof over my head put it that way [emoji4]

Ill go find out now if I can get similar stuf ordered through work and then take it from there, if I don't find out by close of business today ill just order the stuff I linked.

Really need to find a square pattern mat, not sure why I can't find it but I'm guessing due to what I am writing in the search box

Maybe I can source you a black version of the mesh I am using - its water proof :) It sews really well, can be glued, and I am going to do a hot knife weld on it and see what happens. Would be so cool if it can be welded.

Silicone used on a show piece would be fine and even for light wear, I think it would hold up as well. Just don't go wearing them to a theme park or similar. That would just kill them I think.

I am getting close to the end of the US10s, then can start the 8's. These will probably be a show piece. And I need to make clear soles for them to replace the black rubber (yep another white pair of V1s).

Finger Pull Holes :)
From my patterns.

Be sure to make the cutout a 'Y' shape more than a 'T' shape to allow you to have enough material to pull the tabs and glue them down.

How about wearing clear sandwich bags over them! :) ;)

It is exactly how nike did them I think Mark, looks awesome!!! i wish i did it this way! Might have to try this on the v2's... bah!

Oh I got the silicone rubber from work today, will do a pull later and post a pic :)

Plastic bags lol!? Ye I'll grab a couple on my next trip to Asda Rich :p

First pull using new silicone rubber on pyramid mat.

Problem now is I don't think I can get alot of that stuff, as its pricey and someone will say something at work, so need to decide what to use now..

Fiddly to say the least. Right now I am working out how large they need to be on my shoes. I ran another test this morning and it is clearly over sized, something I don't want on these shoes at this late stage.

The hole through the vinyl seems to be a straight cut, 2 halves glued and pressed. I don't think there is any stitching here either. I think the best plan of attack is to make the cutout in the mesh first, then align the hole in the cuff to that.

WOW that looks great :) How thick is it?

Only 1mm.. I need to apply more silicone when I do the 3rd attempt as not only is it thin (looking for 2mm ideally) it also doesn't reach the point of the pyramid.

I think you need a heap of this stuff then ice cube it. The bathroom silicone looks about the same in all honesty, since I want to keep the price down I will give it one more try. Think if I got like a bucket of bathroom silicone put it in a metal saucepan and heated it to a liquid then poured it into a moulding bed(like you made up) it would work? If so, was it Perspex you used for the surround "barrier" walls?
