Bioshock: Who Is Atlas? posters - Another new image P. 3

I thought the art direction in Bioshock was really well-done, and my favorite random background thing was the "Who is Atlas?" poster that could be found posted all over Rapture. It added a sense of mystery to the Atlas who helps you out via the radio, and it was a very cool bit of propaganda-looking stuff.

Since I hadn't seen any replicas of it yet, I thought I'd try my hand at re-creating the artwork. So far, the attached is what I've come up with. It's a decent start, but I lost a LOT of detail. I'm going to keep working on it.

There are a handful of screenprinting places within a few blocks of my house; if I got a good, higher-quality source image together, I might be able to take it to them and have it screenprinted, to get that good old-fashioned feel.

EDIT: I've got my latest version on page 2 now - I think it's a huge upgrade over the one in this particular post.

Looks great so far! I loved the game and those posters definitely added to the eerie atmosphere.

Re: Bioshock: Who Is Atlas? posters

That game [BIOSHOCK] is beyond anything I've ever played. I've felt there were a ton of worthy pieces out there, the Atlas Posters, the Little Sister training prints, etc. but with the graphical talent here on this board... nothing ever got done.

I am really looking forward to seeing your finished piece.

Re: Bioshock: Who Is Atlas? posters

Thanks guys! I'm relatively (read: extremely) inexperienced with Photoshop, but I'm pretty optimistic based on what I've got so far. I think I've mostly got the text down (though it's a bit more...squiggly than I think it needs to be), and I'm pretty sure Atlas himself will improve if I break him up into sections based on how detail-filled they are. Wish me luck!

Re: Bioshock: Who Is Atlas? posters

Very awesome. I don't think my house is complete without putting BioShock posters up everywhere, haha.

Re: Bioshock: Who Is Atlas? posters

Very cool sir. Definitely would love to see this. Keep me in mind if you do some. Awesome idea.

Re: Bioshock: Who Is Atlas? posters

More Bioshock props! I love this game! Very cool posters....didn't someone do a kicka$$ ADAM/EVE syringe recently?

Re: Bioshock: Who Is Atlas? posters

Hey, really nice work! I need to check out this game soon...

Re: Bioshock: Who Is Atlas? posters

awesome!
Funny you should mention this I'm working on the Jasmine poster as we speak!

"Andrew Ryan's Favorite Gal"? :lol I would also love to see the Masquerade Ball poster - though there's a chance 2k Games themselves will be producing some.

I've been working on Atlas' black lines as a starting point, and I figured I'd do the peach shaded areas afterward. I'm much happier with this new iteration of Atlas, and I'll start work on the shading tomorrow.

The thing I'm having the most trouble with is the orange halo/aura thing around Atlas' head and shoulders. Like I said, I don't have much experience with Photoshop, and while I'm doing a decent job on the hard lines, I don't know how to translate those gradient edges into something screenprintable. Any suggestions?

Re: Bioshock: Who Is Atlas? posters

That's not exactly a halo, it's just a "safe space" for the "watercolor"... so just don't paint near the border of the lineart!:D
ABout screen printing I have no clue... I just saw a tutorial on how to fake it!:p

Ah - I see what you're talking about. I think I can fake that okay. :) But I was actually referring to the orange haze that seems to be hovering behind his upper body - it's a different color from the blank paper down near the text, and it actually appears to be the same color as the shading on his face and arms. See what I mean? It's not solidly defined, so I don't know exactly what I can do with it.

Re: Bioshock: Who Is Atlas? posters

And I was talking about that...:)

You can "fake" it, using a brush with a texture (in the brush options you can do that) or making a real watercolor over white paper, scan it at a very high resolution, and copy it on a new layer and set it to "Multiply"...:)

It sounded like you meant the outliney gap where you could see the blank paper in-between Atlas' head and the haze...:confused In that case, what did you mean by this?

The latest revision! Compare to the original:

I'm very happy with it at this point. The orange haze is still a bit questionable, and I need to get the spacing and canvas proportions right, but I think it looks great.

Hmm...anyone who's still interested in this: would you rather have the slightly-simplified version posted here done in silkscreen....or should I re-do it from the beginning to be more accurately detailed so it can be inkjet printed?
