Bigturc's Tie Bomber thread

Stu .. counting on it! :)

Worked on the cockpit today .. really just took 15 min to do! Line traced with a compass at 3 different heights so that if I was to sand more or less, I'd have different reference heights. Then took the dremel with a sanding drum and voila!

Now about that Vader cockpit window, I'm pretty sure of it, but for those who have been there, did you trimmed off the under lip so that it sits flush on the dome? Or the dome edge is thinned down to use the lip perhaps ..

Well .. decided thinning out the lip would be the best way to do this ..

I used the dremel to start but since I wanted a nice equal edge all around, ended up rolling some sanding paper and doing in manually until I reached an inner diameter of 185mm. Nice and sharp!

Thanks all!

I'm happy to report all kits and parts have been found, that includes the Yamato and Shinano parts as well .. Woot! The rest is either somewhere in the mail or on order! The only part I couldn't find yet is the 20mm Flak 38 MIT ds.ah.51 part. Beside Ebay, this kit can't be found anywhere with decent shipping to Canada...

In the meantime, if anyone has an extra, I'd sure glad pay you to get it! ;)

Alright guys,

I compared a bunch of ref pics and came up with 8 to 8.3mm of wing extensions. With 5mm of overlap on the DV wings, that would make the total extensions to be around 12.3mm. Julien already suggested around 0.75mm for the styrene thickness (that's 0.030 inches) .. Does that make sense to anyone?

I also plan on drawing a flat view of the tube scribing for everyone but I'm having difficulty from the refs I have so I'll see how this goes...

Here's the basic stuff I used to get my measurements from :

Guys,
While I was making inventory of my parts to know how many kits I had to buy .. I came up with a question .. I looked at the Leo chassis - or whatever that part is.

I need 2 complete parts for the above/under belly
I need 4 for the side tubing
I need 1 for the under plug box cover

.. and was wondering is this how it's cut to be used ?

I did 15.8mm extensions on my TB. As far as the leopold parts, you have the number right but in the drawing you did, you're getting two pieces for the tubes, out of each part. You'll need one part for each tube piece, (totaling four) because each one has the slant on it. If that makes sense?

Tx swgeek it definitely makes sense .. Problem is everyone seems to agree that it'll take 5x Leopold to build this so if I take 4 chassis to build the tube parts and 2 more to use over and under .. Plus the plug .. That makes 7 Leo ..

I had noticed that slant you're talking about which is once per Leo chassis so where am I wrong in my assumptions?

Al, where it's said you need 5 Leo ?? I think that's a misinformation. I can count only 4 Leo needed. You need 7 chassis and there are 2 chassis in a kit so with 4 kits you even have a spare one.

I count 6 leo's needed, but not just for the chassis

Holy sprue .. 2 chassis per kit huh? Never saw that one coming and the kit scans on Studioscale won't note this anywhere .. I guess I'll see when I receive my kits but I never got an entire one yet (they're on order).

Julien, about the where is it written, well, that's just what I had been reading everywhere since I began to prepare for the build. I also wrote 5x Leo from the first post of this thread and nobody has corrected me yet so I assumed it was fine too! :)

With that in mind, I only see 4 kits needed too. Seven, where do you get your extra kits? Here's what I see (from left to right - bear with me here .. I have no idea on the part no, so enjoy my part description! :)

Chassis - 2 per kit, 7 needed.
Ribbed chassis - 1 per kit, 1 needed.
Inner wing - 1 per kit, 4 needed
Long bar - 1(2) per kit, 1 needed.
Angular piece - 2 per kits, 2 needed.
Long hole drilled bar - 2 per kits, 8 needed.
6 holes part - 2 per kits, 6 needed.

2nd row on the right
Funky part - 1 per kit, 1 needed (cut into 4 pieces)
Small greeblies - 4 per kit, 12 needed (inner wings)
Bottom parts - 2 per kits, 4 needed.

All that to say, I only see 4 kits needed! Please correct any errors above if you see any.

If I am not mistaken, the 6 holes part, there is only 1 per kit, and you need 6.

The Long hole drill part, you need 8 (2 per kit) as it is the same half used for each. This part has two notches on it that are different in size. I only see the smaller notch on all 8 parts.

You can have all the necessary parts with only 4 kits.
Once you cut the angled piece, the remaining part can be easily pasted to the not angled piece, getting the detail you need at the top and bottom of the cylinder. After you put the other piece of Leopold covering these zones, any hint of union will be virtually invisible.

Thanks for the pic Moska .. you're right .. doing it this way is definitely an option!
Although I swear I saw the angle piece in there on one of my ref pics .. but I could definitely be imagining things. I'll check again tonight when I'm back home!

Maybe other will chime in!
