Best of the small cheap printers

Any experience on the best of the small cheap printers ?
My old one has finally gave up, and trying to wade through the endless internet 'reviews' (sales pitch, more like) is driving me round the bend :eek

I'm looking for is A4 feed, cheap ink, quality print results for multi coloured stuff like IDs and photos.

Ideally separate colour cartridges, and none of that printing a page to line up the colours.

Price under £100, ideally around £50.

Any ideas ?

Although I'm partial to the more expensive printers I do have an Epson R280 that's pretty decent with ink, prints great photos, and will also print on discs should you need it.

I use it for all of my photos, they print quite nicely even on lower ink settings. At the time of purchase (about 2-3 years ago) it was $120 Canadian. I think that was about £70 at the exchange rate back then.

I have the standard multifunctional printer of Brother called DCP-115C, has a scanner, fax and multi photo memory cartridge ports XD SD CF and some smaller versions, which proper names I don't know and seperate ink cartridges. It does what does and I'm very content with it :)

I went with a Canon PIXMA MP490, it prints great on everything.

I tried the Kodak and while it did great photos, printing on card & paper was dreadful :angry, don't buy one if you print on card & paper.

I use an Epson R285 with a good quality CISS ink system, it prints everything I ask of it at top quality but they are getting harder to get hold of now and second hand ones are going up in price. Ive used allsorts of paper thick and thin, including metallic film and they all work:)
