Hello all, I'm getting an early start on putting together some Harry Potter-themed gift packages for my best friends this Christmas. I'm going all in and trying to make everything as screen/book-accurate as possible, to make them feel REAL and not just "oh cute, Harry Potter!" (if that makes sense). Each one will contain:
[SUB]-1 custom-made wooden wand
-1 custom-made Ollivander's wand box (complete with purple satin lining)
-1 screen-accurate box Bertie Botts' Every Flavor Beans
-1 screen-accurate Chocolate Frog
-1 Hogwarts acceptance letter/list of school supplies
-1 Platform 9 3/4 train ticket
-1 quill pen (if I can find/make them fairly cheaply, that is)
-1 house tie
-1 "Phoenix feather" (probably Ostrich, definitely fake)
-1 vial of Polyjuice Potion[/SUB]
And that's why I come to you today. I've already made the bottles (see pic), but am having trouble with getting the contents just right. I began a little experiment a few weeks ago, combining various mixtures of flour, water, and dirt to various consistencies to see which would be- and remain- the most like what is seen in the movie. Thick, gloppy, and a sickening shade of green/brown/gray. I put all my variations in little sealed jars and set them aside to see how well they would age. For a while I thought I had a winner, but by now it seems that the water is separating from the mixture (in all of them). I'm sure I could stir it to mix it back up, but I wouldn't ask my friends to do the same every time theirs starts to go south. These gifts should be low-maintenance. Does anyone have any suggestions as to ingredients that can be mixed and retain that muddy pancake batter-like consistency?
