Best Director

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

I really like A Clockwork Orange. But who here hasn't fast forwarded or gone to the bathroom through the stargate sequence in 2001 after the first viewing?

Again, don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like Kurosawa or Kubrick,
I don't deny there influence at all, but it doesn't mean they were flawless, or above review. It's great to make a film that's beautiful to look at, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're fun to watch.

Kubrick was a great concept film maker. Not a great storyteller.

No one has mentioned Yimou Zhang in this thread. And I love his work.
Raise the Red Lantern, To Live, Ju Dou, Curse of the Golden Flower, Shanghai Triad, Hero and so many more. All beautiful films, and engaging, and character driven, and amazingly accessible to people that aren't from that cultural background. That's an unappreciated kind of greatness too.

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

I'm not well versed on foreign directors, but Hero was an amazing movie. I suffered through subtitles, and it was worth it.

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

My favorite movie directors are Charles Chaplin, Christopher Nolan, and the Wachowski brothers.

I also enjoy John Hughes, Orson Welles, Fritz Lang, Alfred Hitchcock and Billy Wilder.

tgreco, be warned that Stanley's watching you from beyond.

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

He's a favorite of mine too.

Even Stanley would have been wowed by him, and then told how he could have done it better! ;) :lol

Bah they were standing in line around the block for Kubricks films way before Speilberg! ;)

But I injected new money and life into the movie game with the Blockbuster! Stanly's stuff is pretty, but mine is exciting.

I see your bedraggled Kubrick and chomped Spielberg, and raise you a Chaplin after thirteen hours editing:

Me. I love every frame of that movie so much.

Or you have a substance abuse problem...LOL
I kid, I kid!

serious question
do you think it would have impacted the films effect to reduce that sequence by half, or even a quarter of it's final length, and if so, why?

It is what it is. I do not presume to wonder about what I would do to somebody else's masterpiece.

Re: Who is the best Director. Well, in your mind.

that strikes me as avoiding the question. Why presume it's beyond review or criticism?

I know it is what it is. But do you think it's necessary for it to be as long as it is. Are you saying the point couldn't have been made in less time?

What the ****, over? We're filing briefs in Dork Court, now? :lol I'm not avoiding the question; I'm being polite by not telling you it's idiotic.

I'm saying that I would not presume to wonder what I would do to somebody else's masterpiece. What is a comic book writer and publisher going to tell Stanley Kubrick about film?
