Bert's Jolly Holiday Costume

Looking to source the pieces for Dick Van Dyke's costume from the "Jolly Holiday" sequence in Mary Poppins.

The coat will be the biggest problem, as I can't sew, and our town doesn't have a sewing shop. But I don't know if thats how the stripes should be applied or not.

Any suggestions on where to get the pieces for this are welcome....I'd like to be as close to 100% as possible.

You could start out with a white coat and add the stripes from another material similar to the coat. Use double sided iron material. You basically iron it to one material, peel off the backside and iron it to the next piece. It holds VERY well. I used in on my Peter Pan tunic about 15 years ago and the stuff is still holding.

You could also use this stuff to start putting the stripes on the coat followed by having someone sew the edges down.

Also have you looked into to color dye? Mark the coat where the stripes go and use some sort of dye or material paint to add the stripes.

There are so many different ways you can accomplish this but you will probably need to experiment.

There are some people over at cosplay.com that have done this version of Bert. Ah hah! I found her! PM her she may have the answers to your questions!

Looks like that girl added ribbon for the stripes. Looks pretty bad too. I think it will be tough to stripe an existing coat by sewing something on that won't look bad. Painting would be a better idea. Look better, and probably be easier to do to boot. Jacquard makes a good product that goes on smooth and doesn't build up and get crunchy as bad as most fabric paints.

http://www.uniformalwearhouse.com/apages/tuxedoahats.html for a cheap boater (yes, $99.00 is cheap for a boater unless you're okay with a foam one). You can probably find your tie and gloves here too. eBay might turn out some better boater options as well.

Only other challenge will be to track down a pair of high waisted white pants.

HEY! I have pics of dick van dyke's costume from the movie.

it's on display at disney hollywood studios.

the fabric is this weird waffle weave, with the broad redish stripe being a grosgrain ribbon that is sewed on. that pockets are HUGE and go from the front all the way to the side seam.

are you trying to do a movie accurate, or a "hey look it's the jolly holiday outfit" type costume?

Trying to go movie accurate. I saw that last month when I was there...just couldn't justify $65,000 for it though!:lol

my wife and i have contemplated these outfits ourselves.
good luck
and be sure to put up pics

I appreciate it! I'll post some progress whenever it's made.
