Hiya everyone.....

Laban here....active member of the LOH and WPE...thought I actually had something worth posting here for a change....

I'm a massive comic book fan and organise a yearly event called HeroPubcrawl here in the UK www.heropubcrawl.com

I'm also currently trying to set up a UK branch of the Heroes Allince with my costumiong associate Samuel gardner.

Anyway...most of the costumes I make are comic book based, and I'm very 'old school' when it comes to materials etc (meaning cheap...he he). as I often have to make between 20-40 costumes a year for the attendants they have to be functional and cost effective.

One of my buddies decided that he wanted to go as The Thing this year....yeah, no prob, it's not like it's a difficult costume right?

Well I thought I'd give it a go, simply sing cardboard, PVA, foamies etc....plus it needs a working jaw as the guy's gotta eat / drink (well mainly drink...ha ha ha)

Here's what we have so far for the mask.....honest opinions?

There are several layers of painting still needed, but I'm kinda chuffed with it so far.

If being "chuffed" is a positive thing, then I too am chuffed with it. :lol Looks good, and old blue eyes needs to drink. Would almost be out of character if he wasn't

that looks great! what's the base?

will you be making another piece for the back of the neck, or glueing stuff onto a headsock or something?

There's a whole bodysuit to go with it......it come all the way up under that mask, so it should 'hopefully' appear seamless.

WOW! I don't think I have seen this done before on this forum, very original of you brother! I hope you pull it off! I always thought that the Fantastic Four had great potential for costuming, just never knew how to MAKE the Thing!

Kudos to you bro! (y)thumbsup

Well, we have made some progress on the Thing costume.

We made a duct tape dummy of my buddy Jimmy, and then used a cheap muscle costume, with added foam shoulders, we then pulled a spandex bodysuit over the whole lot and proceeded to begin adding the rocky layer in foamies.....

It's taking quite a while......lol.

Looks great so far Laban!

I forget, are smaller foamies going to be applied to the ear and neck areas as well...or are you going another route?

Hi Laban, the costume is coming along a treat:thumbsup

I'm curious if the PVA is holding down the foamies well under movement? it's certainly inspiring :)for my usual shoestring buget:unsure

It's like crazy paving on the body. The mask seems pretty spot on, the brow, lips and nose look perfect.

How is visibility in the mask? Looks to be riding a tad low.

Actually, the visibility is fine (apparently, I'm not wearing it just making it)....Jimmy's head is tilted down in the above photo.

It's made with a hinged jaw aswell, so it follows Jimmy's mouth movements (so he can still drink beer whilst wearing it of course)

And we're using Zap-a-gap superglue (alot of it) to attach the foamies.....trust me, they ain't going anywhere....:)

Yes we'll be using smaller cut foamies over the neck / ear area......just we need Jimmy actually wearing it for that part (and the hands) so that we get a nice snug fit..

thanks for the clarification:thumbsup I was going from the info in the first post:$

Looking forward to seeing the completed outfit, maybe a vid file too? to see a bit of the crawl:)

Only other Thing costume I've seen before was covered in actual rocks...this looks to be WAY LIGHTER than that one. :D
