Ben Liebrand Time Machine - wips up

Hey folks,

I finished this one-off commission for dutch DJ and movie nut Ben Liebrand ( http://www.liebrand.nl/prj/aptm/index.html ) about a year ago in feb 2009. He designed this for his 1999 videoclip, which can be seen here at http://www.youtube.com/user/BenLiebrand#p/u/1/8m2REF_Tvlc. Already 11 years ago, it used samples from the then new Austin Powers movie, not released when the clip hit the airwaves.

Thought people here might like to see it. The rings turned and the landing gear folded up. I'll put some buildpics up when i have a bit more time in the next few days. Still spending most of my time on the APC seen in another thread here.

Cheers,

Wasili

Fantastic. Very cool design and immaculate construction. Have any other photo's, finished or build-ups?

Re: Ben Liebrand Time Machine

That's great! I love the concept. Kinda reminds me of Cavor's Sphere ~ if Cavor build a time machine, this is what it would look like.
I'll like to see some close up pics.

Thanx blipper and Howard,

I have plenty of pics, mostly of the build. Will post a few this week.

Cheers,

Wow, what an elegantly designed, beautifully executed model.

Lord knows I have nothing against Star Wars hardware and the like, but it's so nice to see the occasional original design on this forum -- especially one as artfully crafted as your Time Machine.

Looking forward to more images.

Yeah, Everything he said, and not only that, it looks like you had a "Ball" building it, sorry.... couldn't resist:lol

Cheers,

Damn that's awesome. Any WIP pictures for your underlings

Underlings he says :lol

Okidoki, here the first batch of WIPs.

Ben supplied me with orthographic renders of his 3d model. I took those into AutoCAD and redrew most of it. Machined the first batch of parts, including rings, profiles for turning parts, positioning helpers and brackets for the rails.

I used one of them acrylic xmas balls, took off the hanging eye and sanded it smooth to a 320 grid. Then started adding the horizontal and vertical lines in pencil. I didn't know if the xmas ball was really round, so i machined a template (seen on left) to check the radius/height proportions, and help in pencilling the lines.

Started adding the strips to the lower half of the ball. I use chloroform for glueing the styrene, but noticed the top layer of the acrylic was really melting from it, more than usual for acrylic. Had to be careful there and not overdo the glue.

More strips added. I always use tape so the glue can set overnight.

Added the lower rail brackets.

And close up.

More soon.
Cheers, Wasili.

The sci-fi fantasist in me is saying that you haven't actually finished it yet, Wasili. You're simply trying to correct the paradox that occurred when your finished model of the future materialised before you.

Nice work, I'm looking forward to the next wips.
