I was wondering the same thing.
 
It was stated in the article -- a piece of aluminum tube. He glued Foamcore "bulkheads" to this which supported the external skin. :)
 
Oh - actually, I should have been more specific; I was referring to the external armature. It looks very similar to a few in pics from Chronicles. In one the article's pics, it appears that there's a pair of vicegrips at the front of the nose of the pod...
