Beginner Doctor Who prop replica suggestions??

So I started collecting Who stuff a few months ago, and recently I started getting into prop replicas, and would really like to make one rather than just buy something off ebay. Problem is, I have NO IDEA how to even start, or what to even make:unsure. Could someone please help me out or give a few suggestions?

Thanks!

That's a rather large question.. What are you looking to aquire/build? There are tons of threads on here with various props.

Nothing specific really... I just want to see if anyone knows about a prop that a complete beginner may be able to build. Preferably something that isn't made up out of too many parts.

Why not start with a prop that resembles items you could find around the house or at a hardware store. I've seen people put together cool sonic screwdrivers (not screen accurate, but bad-ass nonetheless) from random hardware they picked up from a Home Depot and a pen flashlight. Found item props are great for beginners since the challenge isn't just to make it entirely screen-accurate but to see how close you can come while restricting yourself to a certain kind of material. It's great practice and there's little pressure for a specific outcome due to the nature of the build. It also involves minimal monetary investment since most of the items you'll use are just laying around, or acquired on the cheap.

Epona_Rhi has the right idea with this light saber build!

Psychic paper is easy. You can easily modify some CO sonic screwdrivers to be reasonably screen accurate. Doctor Octoroc is also selling sonic screwdriver kits you can put together.
The new series tardis uses yale keys that you can find online. The tardis lamp for the 2005-2010 version is also commercially available on amazon and you can mod and paint it easily.
If you're into the classic series there are a ton of props like the Fourth Doctor's scarves and misc props he carried around (like magnifying glasses, bags of jelly babies, etc.).
There are also a few misc. paper props in that subforum you can print out. Things like various fake ID's to the "pull to open" sign.
And you can try to build some displays for the props you have (or are going to have). Like learn to etch the Gallifreyan font into glass or plastic or paint up some shadow boxes to look Who-ish.
There's a very comprehensive "Show your Doctor Who Props" thread around (maybe a page or two back) that has just about every prop you can imagine in it.

Psychic paper is likely your best start. Make yourself a little wallet out of black leather and stick a blank card in there. :)

There are loads of other cheap props in Who. 3D Glasses, keys, jelly babies, etc.

the keys are pretty straight forward and the perception filter key is a fun quick build there are some great threads on them too

Thanks everyone, I now have an idea. Will try to make a diagram/plan or something later on, but before anything else I've got to improve my CO Sonic Screwdriver (11th Doctor). I reckoned I'd try to repaint some of the bits. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to improve the CO Sonic Screwdriver toy?

There are some pretty good 11th CO sonic mod videos on YouTube that explain how to add a second button in the handle so it can be activated when extended (without needing the red button). I did that mod with a twist so it would activate by side button and red button whether open or closed, and repainted the copper and metal parts. here's the tutorial I followed (albeit loosely) for my 11th CO sonic mod.

He's since uploaded a new version but I haven't looked at it so it may be better, it may not be.
