Hi again, all!

I'm starting another seemingly impossible project, a shoulder-puppet version of BD-1 the adorable droid from the Jedi Fallen Order game.

My first step was to rip the game file (downloadable from my dropbox . Huge thanks to Gildor and his UE viewer).

The first bit of good news is we now know BD-1's official size: in this exact pose, which is the neutral pose from the game, he's 22x49x31 cm.

One big step towards screen-accuracy!!
Also all the greeblies are, obviously, incredibly accurate. The modelers and painters did an incredible job!

A bit of bad news: the model rigging in the game is somewhat unrealistic, in that BD-1's legs can twist in a way metal cannot. Total screen accuracy isn't really possible. But hey, star-wars droids often have more than one versions.

The second bit of bad news: a lot of the surface detail is baked into normals. What that means is, there's room for interpretation in how deep some grooves and bolts are. But we should be fine.

For now, I'm slowly taking in all the complexity, memorizing the construction of each and every part, and considering a 1:1 cardstock version first. My final version will probably be EVA foam and hand-cast PLA parts using a 3D pen. The surface detail greeblies look like a job for my vinyl cutter.

Puppeteering will be a bunch of bicycle gear shift cables, and one automatic servo controlling the - very expressive- antennae. I aim to find a way to puppeteer him from a hand-made controller attached to my belt.

There's a BD-1 builder's club on facebook btw ( BD1 - Droid Builders Club ). The more we collaborate and share solutions, the faster we'll get to great-looking BD-1 props! Let's have fun
