Batsuit: Arkham Origins V2

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Hey dummy, I think it's about that time we lay that suit to rest and start devoting more time into working on our v2 origins batsuit for the NYCC!

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Finally started mocking up the chest piece to my V2. Im pretty happy with the shape and dimensions of this draft. So far not sure if I'm going to make it one solid chest piece like my V1, or opt for two pectoral pieces. I'm wondering if having them separate would provide more flexibility while the bat symbol that goes over the chest would hide much of the actual seam. I'll have to play with it a bit but now that I have the cowl and neckpiece i can build down from there to get the proportions correct.

I did mine in 2 pieces this time but still glued them together. Sprayed heavily with plasti dip to kinda hide the seam. Looking great buddy

Thanks Floyd. I've seen yours and it's really taking shape. My plan is to ultimately cover most of the armor in faux leather/vinyl. So the seam shouldn't really be an issue. Bought two different vinyls though as one more authentic looking towards the build o have in mind, but also a little thicker, so I'm not sure how well it will conform to the curves of the foam. The other is a bit thinner and I'm confident it would more easily take the curves but has a certain dot-texture to it, which would also be cool but it's not exactly what I had in mind. I'm just playing it by ear right now but I have to tweak the shape just a tad before I commit to this chest piece. Hopefully I can get to it tonight.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Looks great! Thank you for posting pictures of each layer and shape before they are formed! That helps me get an idea for how to form mine! Please keep posting the raw shapes!

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

I have read all of your V1 and V2 progress up until now and I must say I am blown away. I purchased the same cowl as you had in the V1 build and I am currently in the start up phase of an Arkham Origins suit as well. This is my first ever costume build and I want it to turn out as nice as your V1 suit. If you could message me with any tips or tricks I would greatly appreciate it.

Many Thanks

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

This is looking great! I reached out to you on Facebook, but wanted to clarify - the chest pieces are made from the interlocking foam mats, correct? I finally got my foam from hobby lobby for the gauntlets! I'm getting excited to get started but want to make sure that I have the right pieces for the chest part.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

I'll chime in for you guys. Yes, the grey interlocking floor mats.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Thanks Floyd. As he said they are those thick puzzle mats you can get at harbor freight or Walmart.
if you guys have any questions you can ask here or PM me or hit my up at any of the social networks you find me on. I'll be posting progress pics soon on my current build. Just been mad busy with commissions and other things. Need to get back to work on this because working 100% for other people sucks a little bit of the fun out of building these things. :p

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Sounds like a plan. I had some requests by some people to make them gauntlets so I'm currently looking back to it and thinking to improve the way the gauntlets lock on as I don't like the current setup because the Velcro is visable. Now It's easy to make them custom fit for myself and look seamless but I'm trying to incorporate a one size fits all aspect. I think I found a way by replacing the black strip of EVA foam I was using with black 1.5 inch heavy starch waistband elastic. Going to tear up one of my beautiful gauntlets tonight so I can try it. :'(

I'm quite curious if the elastic will have a strong enough bond to the foam or if it will tear away easily when tension is applied.
Nice build

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Was able to squeeze a little bit of time into making another pectorial template. This one came out pretty decent. I'll flip the template and carve out the opposite side tomorrow if time permits. Fyi the bat symbol was just tacked on digitally. I plan on attempting to add a layer of thin faux leather to the foam when it's all assembled. I'll post additional pics as more progress is made.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Decided to just make the other side this morning. Was trying to get a good crease between the pecks but the contact cement kept pulling apart when I flexed it too much... might have to angle my cuts a little if I decide to redo it. I went the lazy route on this and just beveled the crease between the pecs with the dremel. Still needs a lot of touching up... Logo again tacked on digitally.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

I forgot to post my design process for those interested. First took to sketching on paper.

Then I took a picture of my mannequin and started sketching on it via my iPhone until I got a design I was happy with.

Then I covered half my mannequin torso in duct tape and drew the templates I wanted to make and cut them out... Traced them to card stock.. Then finally to foam.
Unfortunately I didn't photograph that process but hopefully if you have a mannequin you know what I mean. Hope that's helpful to someone. Now to start on the abdomen...

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Ugh... The perfectionist in me is comparing this to the sketch and it's bothering me now. Think I'm going to redo it and make another attempt. As you can see the lower half of the pectorals on the proto-build is too rounded in comparison to the sketch. I think the shaper curves in the sketch make the armor look more aggressive imo so I want to see if I can get it more accurate. Then I'll compare the two and see which looks better.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Wish I had more time to work on this... Fortunately I was able to finish the chest using my new template. I'm loving the look. Much more akin to my original sketch.

Just a comparison... To me there is no contest which is better. Love the sharp lines on the new chest template. The rounded pectorals just weren't doing it for me. Now it's time to push forward. :)

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Now that I had the shape I wanted, next step was to cut my faux leather and glue it to the foam.

Purchased two different kinds of vinyl. The one I wanted to use I found to be a little too thick to conform to complex curves of the piece without wrinkling... Although it matches the leather texture and grey color found on the Neca figurine I don't think I could use i effectively on foam. My second option was a thin textured vinyl. It was more white than grey but it had a cool tactical texture but I purchased a can of charcoal grey fabric spray paint to fix the color issue.

All said and done my only issue was with the adhesive. It doesn't seem to stick well around the edges as I can see it wanting to lift. I'll have to try an alternative spray adhesive and hopefully I can fix it without having to start over cause I'd hate to waste the material. These pics aren't great but I took them in an attempt to show the texture of the vinyl. Hopefully I can solve my adhesive problem tonight. If anyone has suggestions or experience when it comes to gluing vinyl to foam then let me know.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

It will be tedious, but I strongly recommend using rubber cement/barge cement. It will hold that vinyl to the foam FOREVER and it will still allow flexibility. The look of the foam with the vinyl on top is fantastic, by the way.
