Batman..The Dark Knight Returns

Over the last 3 years...at least I think it's been that long, I've been working on this in my spare time...

The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. In my opinion the BEST comic book ever written. I also love the artwork and how the Dark Knight is protrayed. Big, Bad and Violent..just like me.... :D

The headpiece and cowl still havent been molded after all this time because it's just not completely done I think. I keep tweaking it and changing small stupid things on it. :confused
The mouth area will be a working prosthetic, or at least that's the idea.
Here's the head, cowl...probably seen it posted before so just consider this a shameless plug by my part... :love

And this is the torso. Water clay sculpt. It weighs just over 100lbs. Sculpted on the same life cast as the Begins chest but with a crap load more clay on it. It's actually the second one I've done as the weight of the first sculpt caused the whole thing to collapse one evening. Yea...I wanted to cry. I'm usually pretty good at handling, working and keeping water clay sculpts alive over time but this one got away from me the first time.

Here's the current one.

I'm going for that older look. Someone who's obviously been in great 'bulk' shape their entire lives, but as the years have gone on that same muscle, while still present, has that kind of sag look to it. Also I'm going for a look of a body under some kind of tights. That's what those creases are meant to be but for now just really a work in progress. Typical spandex type batman costume look I suppose.

It's a big sculpt. Chest is over 55 Inches around and the stomach area is over 50 inches around. It's biiig but that's what I wanted. :) It's gotta work with that headpiece. And who knows, maybe even some other custom stuff if I ever find the time to get to it. :)

Enjoy.

Critiques and feedback always welcome.

I love that comic and that is absolutely amazing. I actually felt my heart speed up looking at the pics. Great job so far, can't wait to see more pics.

Thanks guys....seriously.
I really loved that comic from the very first moment I read the first few pages....Like that 1 music group you heard as a kid and instantly fell in love with. That was my feeling when reading through the DKR. So naturally I really want to do this whole get-up justice. I'm real happy to read the feedback thus far. I Hope that once it's done it'll live up to all your expectations guys. :thumbsup

That's really cool buddy... The reason I singled you out (LOL) is because the heart speeding up is the feeling I got reading that comic. I dont want to sound all sappy or anything but, well....an emotion is an emotion...and I'm honored to hear you got that from these WIP pics. That's probably the most gratifying thing ever.

Corpseguy just posted some fun photoshopped pics of my sculpts. I thought they were worth showing over here. :)

OK..This is from 2006..it HAS to be done by now, right? :)

Nope! LOL...the cowl sculpture looks exactly the same today as it did 7 years ago in those pics.
It's been in storage since 2008 together with a ton of other unfinished sculptures. Once UD Replicas took off, I closed the sculpting/molding studio and put all those unfinished sculpts in storage.
I'll probably end up just throwing them away now as I just don't see myself ever getting back to finishing any of them. How sad is that?

David

Dibs on this one! :lol It is a little sad. Always loved your take on this one. :thumbsup

Yea, tell me about it. I love that sculpt, but I'll 'probably' never get around to finishing it....and now that I think about the sheer number of unfinished sculpts I still have in storage it literally makes my heart bleed. Back then a lot of time, sweat and blood went into all of that stuff but life changes, things evolve...and at the end of the day just being able to look back on all of that - to this day - still puts a rather nice smile on my face.
In any case, the level of talent I'm now seeing from even your average hobbyist easily surpasses the stuff that I was doing all those years ago. A lot of people have stepped up and have been banging out pretty awesome work. The world is and continues to change, it's just great for me to look back and see that in some small way I too was a part of it. Certainly lots of fond memories...:)

I totally understand the shift in forcus for your business, but don't throw them away! You created art with those pieces..save them..or send them to me!

LOL...not sure exactly but I'm pretty sure I'll just be throwing them away. I need the room their stored in, and don't see myself ever finishing them. I wont give or sell them...besides they're way too heavy for that. This cowl sculpt here easily weighs 50lbs alone if not more...sadly it looks like I'll just toss them...but at this rate if I hold onto them any longer then my kids can start digging into these sculpts too.
