I hear people complain about the 1:144 scale AT-AT for it's size. Here is a cool diorama with F-toys 1:144 scale AT-AT's, but I wouldn't have the space to put a diorama together with anything like this with a bigger scaled model. The 1:144 scale is perfect for something like this.

Here is an even more impressive display with what I'm guessing is a similar sized 1 1:144 scaled model.

How can you not love a scale like this??

Whats the cobsenus on the tie fighter panels?
Are people painting them black or leaving them as is?

Leave as is and shoot my clear coat on top. No need to paint other wise IMHO.

Work was pretty slow today so I decided to sprue cut.

That's my least favorite part of modelling so I'm going to do a whole bunch all a once.
Today I did, 1/144 slave 1 (bandai AND fine molds) 1/48 snowspeeder, bandai y-wing.

Tomorrow I'll the the bandai u-wing, 1/72 tie fighter and the my 1/35 viper mk2 (that I've been putting off for years.

Then, I'll do my second least favorite thing.....The cockpits of all of them.

So my plan is to work on all of them at once over the summer.

I use a DeWalt hardware storage box for all the pieces.

Honestly? Sprue cutting is what keeps me from modelling. And I hate painting pilots an cockpits.

So if I can eliminate those steps, I'm good

On my Vader TIE I painted the blue-gray main color but left the solar panels the molded color. Turned out really nice.

Usually I paint everything, but in 1/72 I'm OK letting some things go.

Yeah, thats what i was planning to do.
I figure the plastic has a nice sheen so why take a chance mucking it up.
I was just double checking to see if theres some advantage to painting them.

Agree 99% of the time. For the black Solar Panels on the 1/72 TIEs, looks great left alone.

I am selectively painting parts of my 1:72 Special Forces TIE- it's hull is black and so I am picking out some panels for semi-gloss black, chrome black and matte black (with a couple mixes)

One reason plastic looks wrong unpainted is that it is actually whitish-clear with pigment inside. The specular highlights on plastic pieces are white instead of a lighter tone of the color they appear (as in real world objects). One way around this would be to reduce the highlights to nothing with matte spray or a dull coat. I often use charcoal dust rubbed into the surface then removed- this kills the gloss for me.

I have (what I thought was) a 1:144 f-toys ATAT. But it stands at 4.5", not 6" (Like I thought the bandai was.

That's interesting, I just assumed the F Toys AT-AT was around 6" because it is supposed to be 1:144th like the Bandai.

I know they made two of them. There was a two pack with smaller ones and a single, larger one. That's the one I have

IMHO, the F-Toys AT-AT is too small for 1/144. Look at the size of the AT-ST compared to it in that one F-Toys diorama. I prefer a larger size AT-AT closer to the scaling between the MPC AT-AT and the 1/144 figures

Bandai's AT-AT is what size you would expect given a roughly 22.5 meter height.

It's wouldn't be the first time a model does not actually match the listed scale.

Unfortunately that's what comes with trying to scale based on inconsistent source data, blue prints, intended studio model scales etc...

Bandai and Fine Molds have different sizes for their 1/72 stuff.

I've been following this thread for a while, must get myself 3 of those AT-ATs! I did the second diorama but these were the 1/100 AMT/ertl kits. The diorama ended up pretty huge.



This is a second one I did with the F-Toys which was a much more manageable size. The Bandai ones are going to be perfect!!!

Inconsistent source data......I hear ya! I just got my A-wing and it's listed as 72nd scale but WAY too big for that especially if you want to display it with the X-wing!

BUT you can hardly blame Bandai because blueprints and measurements say one thing but then when you look at the studio model the pilot's head fills the canopy making this closer to 30th scale! kinda like the snowspeeder, the studio model would not have fit pilots inside it with heads that big!

Someone stuck a 1/48 pilot in Bandai's A-wing & it looks much better to me. As you say, it's especially obvious next to their 1/72 X-Wing.
