Howdy gang!

Just a little pre-ramble here. I originally wrote this as a single post but it exceeded the limit of 20 images per post. D’oh! So I’ve taken what was once one long post and broken it up in to a few smaller ones. Thanks for checking out the build.

I'm in the process of building a 1:144 scale Falcon as a Christmas gift for a friend. I've been working on this for a while, sometimes I feel like I'm the worlds slowest model builder, I really do. I started posting pics over in the 1:144 Falcon group build thread. I didn't want to clutter it up too much with all my WIP pics so I started this thread. This way I can go into more detail about the build.

Big, big hats off to all the folk who've posted their builds there. Thanks for all the inspiration. I have to admit some of the ideas were so good that I borrowed them for my build.

I’m building it in flight mode so there's no landing gear or boarding ramp to worry about. I'm not using any photoetch or 3D printed parts in this build either. I am, however, adding lighting where I can, the engines, cockpit, gunner bays, etc. I also intend to build some sort of diorama for the base but haven't completely settled on an idea yet. I'll have to think of something soon, time's a tickin'!

I started with the cockpit. I cut and drilled out the back wall for lighting, added the head rests to the passenger seats and rounded the tops of the pilot and co-pilot seats. I thinned out all the crossbars in the canopy to make them appear more in scale. I made a door from styrene strip. I just drew the details on loosely with a gundam pen to give the impression depth. I wasn't too precise with the painting as I knew that once it's all closed up with the canopy in place you're not going to see a whole bunch inside anyway. I also didn't want the cockpit lights blazing away at blinding intensity and tried to keep them toned down.

On to the mandibles. I wanted the red headlights so I added a pair of red 3mm led's to the front of each one. I drilled out the holes in the end caps for headlights themselves. Doing it this way certainly provided some light blocking challenges but I was up for it. I'm really happy with the results.

Next up I started adding all the damage to the hull. Thanks to crackerjazz for the idea of reducing reference pics to lay out the damage. I also used my PG Falcon for reference / comparison. I added the dent to the bottom of the cockpit tube, the big blast in the side of the starboard docking ring, the big gouged part in the hull by starboard mandible, and the blast pattern on the top port side and the big blast on the bottom. I scratch made a part to fit in behind the blast in the bottom of the hull. Again I used my PG falcon as a guide. I also bent the edges of the paneling in a few spots.

I airbrushed a little Vallejo black primer and decanted Tamiya AS-20 over the whole thing.

Next up, lighting! I made a light box and use some warm white strip LED's for the engines. I'm going to run the whole thing off a 9V adapter so my friend doesn't have to worry about constantly changing batteries.

Here I started working on the grey paneling. For the medium grey I used Tamiya grey primer. For the rest of the grey accents I used custom mixes of warm and cool variants of the Vallejo Mode-Air light gull grey. I then did a quick test fit to see how everything is looking. I took everything apart again and went in and knocked back some of the panels with AS-20 while leaving others at full opacity.

Next the gunner bays. I drilled holes for fiber optics and painted the interiors. I have also gone back and reworked a few of the grey panels and added all the red and yellow ones.

And that is where my Falcon stands at the moment. I'm trying to decide if I want to wait until I close everything up before I clear coat and weather it or if I want to do it while everything is apart right now. Anyone have any advice on that?

Oh, and this is my co-pilot...

Looking great so far. (y)
Color matches are pretty good and the greeblies underneath the damaged parts are well done, but why no PE exhaust grill?

PS: Could be just me, but Chewbacca looks kinda different. o_O

Sindariel, thank you very much. There are a few reasons I chose not to get PE, but it was basically cost and timing. Yeah, Chewie started dyeing his hair, said he wanted to look younger. ;)

Thank you very much for the kind words, Richard Baker. It's a fun build for sure.

Right on Analyzer, that's awesome. Best co-pilots around. (y)

Nice customisation and damage mods on your build . Thanks for sharing (y).
Apologies in advance for this question , but you’ve applied decanted AS-20 over Vallejo Black Primer .
Thing is , I’ve been under the impression that you shouldn’t apply enamel or lacquer based paint (AS-20) over acrylic ( Vallejo Black ) .
Is this correct , or have I got it backwards ? Is the Vallejo water-based acrylic ?

;)Ged

Thank you, gedmac66. You raise a really good question. The rule I as understand it is just as you say, acrylic over lacquer is ok, but lacquer over acrylic is a no go. But the waters get a little muddy if you start to descend further. It seems there are different types of lacquer out there. There's lacquer and there's acrylic lacquer. From what I understand regular ol' lacquer will eat through an acrylic base coat where as acrylic lacquer won't. The AS-20 is a synthetic acrylic lacquer according to the Tamiya website. As-20 Insignia White (Usn) 100Ml Spray Can / Tamiya USA

Yes, the Vallejo black primer is water-based acrylic. I also spray in several light mist coats, especially with the first few coats. I had no problems, luckily. But if you're not sure it's probably always best to test on a scrap piece first.

Applying lacquers over acrylics is absolutely no problem as long as you don't flood the surface. Thin coats are your friend.
Enamels don't attack acrylics.
