Howdy gang!
Just a little pre-ramble here. I originally wrote this as a single post but it exceeded the limit of 20 images per post. D’oh! So I’ve taken what was once one long post and broken it up in to a few smaller ones. Thanks for checking out the build.
I'm in the process of building a 1:144 scale Falcon as a Christmas gift for a friend. I've been working on this for a while, sometimes I feel like I'm the worlds slowest model builder, I really do. I started posting pics over in the 1:144 Falcon group build thread. I didn't want to clutter it up too much with all my WIP pics so I started this thread. This way I can go into more detail about the build.
Big, big hats off to all the folk who've posted their builds there. Thanks for all the inspiration. I have to admit some of the ideas were so good that I borrowed them for my build.
I’m building it in flight mode so there's no landing gear or boarding ramp to worry about. I'm not using any photoetch or 3D printed parts in this build either. I am, however, adding lighting where I can, the engines, cockpit, gunner bays, etc. I also intend to build some sort of diorama for the base but haven't completely settled on an idea yet. I'll have to think of something soon, time's a tickin'!
I started with the cockpit. I cut and drilled out the back wall for lighting, added the head rests to the passenger seats and rounded the tops of the pilot and co-pilot seats. I thinned out all the crossbars in the canopy to make them appear more in scale. I made a door from styrene strip. I just drew the details on loosely with a gundam pen to give the impression depth. I wasn't too precise with the painting as I knew that once it's all closed up with the canopy in place you're not going to see a whole bunch inside anyway. I also didn't want the cockpit lights blazing away at blinding intensity and tried to keep them toned down.
On to the mandibles. I wanted the red headlights so I added a pair of red 3mm led's to the front of each one. I drilled out the holes in the end caps for headlights themselves. Doing it this way certainly provided some light blocking challenges but I was up for it. I'm really happy with the results.
