BAE Sea Harrier Frs-1

Hello, I am seriously considering purchasing the Airfix 1/24 Scale kit of the BAE Sea Harrier Frs-1. If I were to get the kit I'd want to paint it in the sceme of the '82 Falklands conflict. I know the Brits repainted the Harriers in a medium gray color for the conflict. My question is: Has anyone purchased this kit? If so how is the quality and what colors did you use to paint it?
I have not put a model together in quite a few years so this would be a good challenge for me.

the kit you will find to be wierd.

it is a cobbled together has of original wings and a retooled fuselage. so the fuselage has good sharp recessed panel lines. the wings have raised panel lines a la 1980's. so it will need rescribing to match the fuselage.

some of the model mags when it came out came down on the fence review wise, praising the fuselage, ripping airfix for not retooling the wings.

I put this kit together about 10+ years ago in the standard colour scheme from the box.
Pretty decent fit on most parts. A lot of flash on the cockpit sprues and some distortion of the fuselage. The kit I bought had a damaged canopy and ejector pin marks on the wing surfaces. I used the parts replacement slip that came in the box and got new ones tho.

Good kit. Nice detail and fit (for the age) but not too complex. I'd give it 8/10.

I think you may be confusing 2 different models here.
The 24th scale Harrier has engraved panel lines and a whole load of quite deep rivets all over it. It comes with a new forward fuselage and nose section (you add this after removing the Gr-1 cockpit/nose section from the original fuselage halves).
I suspect you might be thinking of the 48th scale Harrier Fa-2 kit, which was modified from their original FRS-1 with the addition of a new fuselage (the new parts being engraved, whilst the old parts are raised panel lines).;)

The 24th scale Harrier is an impressive model when built and I have seen some real stunners with some extra work.
The cockpit is quite basic, those rivets (to me) are too heavy and really need to be toned down or filled completely. Undercarriage bays are a bit sparse, but you do get that full engine (add some plumbing and it can look really good)
At the end of the day, it all depends on how far you wanna go with it.
I look at it as a good starting point.:)
