Babylon 5 - Appreciation Thread

Joe is one of us, a fan, a geek, and a dreamer!

When I first started shooting the breeze with him I had NO idea who he was. :lol

The most unassuming creator writer producer I have ever met

I'm rewatching Crusade right now. You guys are being unduly Harsh. If we were to judge STNG by Season 1 standards, your same arguments would apply. good ol WB, I think that a couple more seasons it would have been as great as it's parent show. But Noooooooo...Let's shut it down like a SyFy (laying the groundwork for the future) series.

Best (pardon the pun) occasional character is Bester.

JMS essentially stopped Crusade from going forward. It was on TNT at the time, and they were interfering with it regularly and in some monstrously bad ways. At one point they wanted Capt Gideon to have the thief lady setup to be raped by an Earth Alliance officer so then Gideon could blackmail the EA to do something for him. That was just one of the really terrible 'notes' from TNT execs. Crusade wasn't too bad. But "Legend of Rangers" was terrible.

To each their own, but, to me, Crusade is to B5 what Enterprise is to Trek.

To be fair, I wasn't a fan of the premise - a lone starship searching for a cure? With the entire planet at stake? It would have been more interesting (though more expensive) if it took place from the POV of MULTIPLE ships exploring MANY different parts of the galaxy at the same time with B5 (or maybe Excalibur) as the hub. Still, it's a week premise to base a series out of. IMHO, the REAL "Crusade" was Sheridan against the Shadows.

Starting Season 5 tonight :D

"In the Beginning" was FANTASTIC !

I'm glad I chose the sequence I did. That movie fit like a glove where it was advised to watch it. It fills in the minor blanks of seasons 1 to 4.

Great stuff :cool

Wow, what a fantastic roller-coaster ! Season 5 did start off a bit slow compared to season 4, but it picked up very quickly :thumbsup

Going to watch the penultimate episode (21) of season 5 tonight, then "River of Souls" followed by "Legends of The Rangers" :D

Having second thoughts about sequence though. What do you guys suggest :

Should I watch the last episode "Sleeping in the light",

a) after those 2 movies as the sequence graphic above suggests,

or

b) after "Crusade" and before "Lost Tales" as I read suggested elsewhere ?

No spoilers please :D, just which option do you think would have the maximum enjoyment factor :cool

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I don't think that was the case. All of Earth Alliance and the Interstellar Alliance, except those defending and quaratining Earth and colonies, were looking for a cure but when they got a lead on a cure the Excalibur was sent as their specialist ship to dig deeper.

Almost there :D

Watched River of Souls last night, and ..... half of The Legend of the Rangers.

Never thought I'd have anything negative to say about the franchise, but man, Legend sucks

What's with the screaming chick doing battle aerobics

???

Worst interpretation of a good concept I've ever seen.

So far, only G'Kar has managed to somehow save the movie's dignity a little bit.

Anywho, will force myself to finish the movie tonight, and that has made me decide to watch the final episode "Sleeping in the Light" immediately after.

I need something with a good 'classic' B5 punch to take the bad taste of Legends away :)

Also pay attention to the janitor who turns out the lights on the Station! :D

You were warned! :lol

Indeed

The overall feeling I got from Legends was that some smart alec somewhere decided to go for a movie that would appeal to a younger generation (Dragonball z video game players maybe

) to have a spin off series like Star Trek with that particular crew.

Totally ruined the B5 magic formula.

Every sentient spacefaring race has Swedish meatballs. The Paq Morah (sp?) Are carrion eaters, eating stuff that's been dead for five days or so. I'd rather have European IKEA horsemeat than try those out.

I watched Babylon 5 for one reason. The CG. It was pretty groundbreaking to have CG in a Sci-Fi TV series done on home computers. I was a big Amiga nerd back then. This series was fuel to my Amiga fandom fire! That and the fact that Tron was in charge of things early on... ;) I eventually got bored with the story arc and stopped watching. Maybe I should revisit it again...

Yeah. Sleeping in Light WILL break you up, but only in the best way. It's a truly fitting end to the show.

And as a note, when the switch is thrown in the last episode, you'll know what switch I mean, that person doing it? That is actually JMS himself. I asked him at a convention what he was thinking when he threw that switch on the set. He was near tears at the end.
