Baby Krite - "Critters" - Finished pics Page 2

I absolutely love cheesy monster movies, and Critters is one of my favourites. I own two of the lifesize BumpInTheNightProductions adult critters (now OOP), but I've always wanted one of the babies as seen in Critters 2.

As no-one has ever made any (that I'm aware of) it's always been something that I've considered having a go at sculpting. After finally plucking up the courage to at least have a go, here's the results:

There are only a few reference pictures available - here's what I was going for:

Hopefully it'll end up looking meaner once it's got it's furred, has the eyes painted red and teeth added - I still think it looks a little too friendly as it is. Still, I'm fairly happy with it for my first attempt at sculpting. I just pray that the plastic hemispheres I've used for the eyes won't melt in the oven when I'm cooking the Sculpey!

I love it!

Advice: Reduce the temp when cooking the sculpey but increase the time and leave it in the oven to cool down when the time is up and the oven is shut off.

Re: Baby Krite - Critters

GREAT sculpt, my friend! Looks just like 'em! I can't wait to see him furred up. :)

Regarding baking the sculpy, I think the temp to bake at in the instuctions is around 250 so if you reduce that by half, it may not melt the plastic. However, if you're planning on molding and casting it, I'd use a heat gun and just stay away from the eyes all together.

Can't wait to see it finished!

Re: Baby Krite - Critters

Board member Ronculus who made the awesome Gremlins replicas is said to be working on Critters as well.

I'm looking forward to seeing yours Howlrunner!

Re: Baby Krite - Critters

Looks great!!

As you can tell there are a few Critters aficianodos here!

You can do that? Hopefully that'll work. I don't have a heat gun so can't go down that route. It's meant to be 130 degrees C for 15mins per 6mm - the arms/belly are the thickest parts (the body is built up on a polystyrene egg) - about 24mm - so that would be 130C for 1 hour. So you think that 65 degrees C for 2 hours would do it?

And please don't tell me Ronculus is doing Critters - I think my wallet may cry! :lol

Re: Baby Krite - Critters

Well I put the sculpt in the oven for about 2 hours at 75 degrees C - it came out nicely hardened, and the left eye was perfect. The right eye softened and warped slightly - not by much, just so that it left a gap between the plastic eye and the sculpted eyelids. I fixed this pretty easily by adding to the eyelids with a little Milliput.

Started painting it up the other night (the brown stripes on the baby shouldn't really be there on the Krite when it's still just a baby, but it just didn't look right without them), so it's now nearly finished.

In this picture you can also see the toothpicks I've painted the ends of that I'm going to cut down and use for the teeth (supergluing them in individually). You can also see the leftovers of a cuddly monkey I slaughtered and skinned to use on the little guy. :lol After much searching through charity shops I eventually found a toy with fur that has a nice multi-toned (realistic-ish) quality. Should be finished soon. :)

Re: Baby Krite - Critters

Lookin really good bro! I loved those movies back in the day!

Ive got to ask... Whats your fascination with evil babies? :lol

Just being silly, I really thought the Maul was a great and unique piece, and found it funny that your next piece is also an evil infant!

But keep up the good work, cant wait to see this furred and fanged up! (y)thumbsup

Re: Baby Krite - Critters

Babies. Yeah - they're pretty scary things! :lol The baby Krites in Critters 2 were just too cool though. Plus they take a lot less clay to make! :lol

I considered offering these, but to be honest, as this is my first ever sculpt, I didn't think it would turn out good enough be worth selling (compared to some of the amazing pieces I've seen on here). As it is, with the teeth in (just finished that part) it actually looks surprising good. That and I don't have a CLUE how I would cast it. :redface Guess mold making is the next thing I have to learn about and have a go at. Maybe next time....

Re: Baby Krite - Critters

Well I finally got him finished! :)

Teeth were cut from the end of toothpicks (the first lot I cut I painted an off-white colour before seeing that it was pretty much exactly the same colour as the original wood, so the next lot of teeth I made I just left unpainted) and each one superglued in place with the help of a pair of tweasers.

The hair from the skinned monkey toy was hotglued on and high gloss varnish applied to the eyes, mouth and teeth. Now it's finished I really wish I had molded it to make more!

Hope you like him. :)

That critter came out looking great Howlrunner!

Great Job, I like it!!!

Can't believe those are toothpicks for the teeth,
They look like a Real set of chompers in that big mouth!

-Take Care

As a matter of interest, if I *were* to sculpt another one (not saying I will right now - I've just started something that will most likely take up all my spare time), are there any companies or individuals who would be able to do casts of it? Is this covered somewhere else already? Any info would be appreciated. :)
