Avengers: Age of Ultron (Post-release)

Overall assessment is movie was really good but not great. The action scenes were off the charts and plentiful, love the character development for Hawkeye, Hulk, and Widow, and the twins and Vision fit in well towards the end. No single character dominated the film unlike the first Avengers, the cast was portrayed with incredible balance. I thought the more adult oriented jokes were worth a chuckle, but not as witty as one would expect from Whedon. Probably as a result of all the editing, the story seemed choppy and some parts felt rushed. I thought Ultron and Vision's introductions were rushed especially. And
Quicksilver's death didn't carry much weight as we weren't given much of a chance to build a connection with his character.

I too didn't see the point for the Mk45, it had no discernible new features. Vision's density shifting ability wasn't showcased much. I also felt Ultron was underpowered, but Spader's portrayal was brilliant, loved all his snarky mannerisms in a robot. The twins were well played but their scenes felt limited; I never got the sense that SW needed to fly on her own outside of QS's protection, which made the Hawkeye-SW scene in the final battle a bit out of left field. Speaking of Witch (pun intended ;)) she's gonna be a force to be reckoned with in Civil War, really glad they have a legit powered up female hero now.

In spite of its issues (an extended cut could solve most of them), I am definitely going to try to see this again in the theaters.

Technically, so could Wanda, if she gets it into her crazy-pants brain to do so... ;)

Says the same thing here!

As for Taylor-Johnson, it’s clear his character’s demise is disappointing: “The sad thing is, it’s the only sort of franchise I wish I wasn’t being killed off on,” he said, before co-star Elizabeth Olsen (who plays his twin sister, Scarlet Witch) reminds him that her character has the power to bring people (like Hawkeye) back to life. So maybe there’s some home for a Pietro return, after all.

You guys have ruined me. The whole time I just kept wondering how many servos it would take to make an animatronic Ultron head.

EDIT: also:
Anyone notice that one of those AI programs Tony went through when he grabbed FRIDAY was labeled Jacosta? I about fell out of my chair.

The card/card reader that were in that shot were Sony SxS cards, which are the same kinds of cards the Alexa they used to shoot the movie takes. I imagine there's some prop department forgetfulness story behind that :)

Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention, but could someone explain the whole, random pool of sight thing with Thor, and how his dream somehow told him to send a bolt of lightning through, what is now known as, the Vision. I just didn't get the connection between the dream he had, the pool and the Vision. I'm not a Marvel follower when it comes to comics. I prefer DC when reading comics, so if it's something that's supposed to be obvious I apologize.

That's one of those scenes that I think suffered when they cut down the film from its initial three hour and thirty minute runtime. Here's hoping we get these cuts back in deleted scenes/extended or director's cut.

Saw the movie yesterday and absolutely loved it. I think it's the best Marvel movie of the whole bunch.

I think he's talking about the last suit Tony has in the movie, the one during the final battle. Didn't have anything special that we saw, nor a reason to change from the MK 44 (which I assume was the non-prototype version of the MK 43 from IM3, with more red on it), it just has a more organic design. And why the hell doesn't he use Jarvis anymore in the suit ? We know he's not dead, and he just gave a copy his matrix to Vision, so why use FRIDAY ?

While that is true not many of his other suits apart from the ones in IM3 and the suitcase one had special functions either. Just pure upgrades from previous ones. And the more suits they put in the more they can sell merch :p

My take on the Fox Quicksilver vs. Marvel Pietro comparison.
While the Fox version has more of a "wow" factor and much more fun to watch, I can understand Marvel's version because the latter is actually more true to the comics. Quicksilver in the comics was never a time-bending guy like DC's Flash. I think Fox did a great character but Marvel/Joss simply remained faithful to the books.

Well, I just got through with a) watching the movie, and b) reading everything in this thread. I'm seeing it again on the 16th for my birthday party, so I'll probably make more comments then, but here's my comments on my initial viewing, and thoughts I had both going in and coming out of the movie.

1) Joss Whedon's comments, and other continuity-related issues: There's a lot of continuity problems with the MCU right now, as far as I'm concerned. TWS really affected the status quo, and we've seen very little of how it's affected things. We know that Coulson's group has been trying to reform SHIELD, but what about the rest of the world?

Apparently, according to this movie, the Avengers have been working to clean up Hydra, same as Coulson's group. So why haven't their paths ever crossed? And who are the Avengers working for, if SHIELD is gone? Maria's likely where they're getting their intel from, so at least that makes sense. And what about Stark? At the end of IM3, he gave up being Iron Man and destroyed his armors. Yet now he's fighting as IM with no comments made at all?

[ETA]
Oh, and just for reference, the small, local theater I saw it in played the Superman v Batman, Star Wars VII, and Ant-Man trailers.
I get that they can't expect everyone to watch AoS, and likewise that they can't expect everyone to go out and watch the movies on opening weekend, so there has to be some degree of separation. Plus, there's Joss's comments. Still, though, they could have done simple little details that would have made the overall universe fit together better. For example, after the events of TWS, Hill could have commented to Coulson in one of her scenes that Stark had become IM again to fill in the gap that SHIELD left. Or they could've shown a news report in the background about Stark becoming IM again, to fill that almost 2-year gap where we haven't seen Stark, and last we saw he wasn't IM anymore.

Likewise, connecting AoS to this. Spoilers for the April 28 AoS episode, as well as discussion over promos for the final episodes:
a) April 28th's episode ended with Coulson having gotten the intel on the scepter's location and passing it to Hill.
b) We also know that the season finale will involve a "final showdown" of sorts with Hydra
Both of these are seemingly contradicted by the movie. (I'll be as vague as possible to avoid spoilers)
For a), what was the point, if that was the "last" Hydra base? It certainly didn't seem, from the AoS scene, that they were almost done.
For b) if it was the "last" base, what's the point of the season finale?

IMO, what should have been done, is this; It was not the "last" base, it was "one of the last" bases, which they chose to assault based on Hill's intel. Which, after they get out with the scepter, the following dialogue could occur:
"Hill, we got the scepter. How did you know it would be at this base, anyway?" "I'm sorry, but that's classified information."
Just a simple scene like that, and you a) incorporate AoS into the movie in such a way that neither requires AoS knowledge, nor leaves non-viewers left behind, and b) makes both AoS and this movie work. Plus, then it doesn't touch the issue with Joss's comments and the Schrodinger's Coulson issue.

2) The "sexism" in the movie: Not sure if people have heard, but as of today, Joss's been forced off of twitter and social media, because of the "sexism" in the movie. The specific problem, was Natasha being put into a "damsel in distress" position. Personally, given all the badassery she'd already shown in the movie, I had no problem with it. I had a much bigger problem with the fake and forced "romance" between her and Banner. I wouldn't have as much of a problem with it, if it was supposed to be her seducing him, but it was portrayed as being real for her, and all these other people could "see" it. I definitely could have done without it.

That's probably all I have to say for now, other than it really sucked that the theater lost power. It was right during the final scene between Vision and Ultron, too. Took about 10 minutes for them to get stuff rebooted, and we ended up seeing the Banner in the jet scene twice, so that we didn't miss anything.

It may have been the last HYDRA base, but that doesn't mean that HYDRA is completely defeated.

Remember that only the fate of Strucker was shown. The other HYDRA dude's whereabouts are unaccounted for. With him being the last head of the snake, he now has control of ALL of HYDRA's remaining assets, so taking him down will be problematic. While the multiple heads of HYDRA allowed for greater range of motion and varied mission objectives, it also meant that HYDRA's assets were not all working toward the same goal. Now that there's one head, one leader, everyone will be marching to the same beat. They are all organized and following one person's commands. This will make taking down the final head that much more difficult.

There are times that I'm profoundly ashamed of humanity as a whole and fandom in particular. Having seen some of the tweets that were sent Joss' way prior to his shutting down his twitter account, I can only say... "WHAT THE FRAK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!"

As I said elsewhere: People are bitching at Joss Whedon, the man who is probably one of the biggest feminists in Hollywood, because

1) he had a tough female character show interest in someone in a romantic way, and

2) he had a villain follow baseline psychological warfare tactics and kidnap the female member of the team, erroneously thinking it would throw everyone off their game.

Yeah, these whackjobs are just looking for an excuse to bitch.

It's times like this that makes me wonder if the Avengers should've just let Ultron wipe out humanity. Just downright pathetic and disgusting response from some of these fans.

There's no shortage of ignorance on the Internet.
All I care is that Joss isn't emotionally affected by this. Everything he's ever created is a labor of deep love.
He's certainly smart and savvy enough to understand the nature of dog-piling on the Internet. Joss is made of tougher stuff than all those adolescent trolls combined.
Im sure he shut those accounts only as a matter of convenience.
