Assassin's Creed Unity-Arno Dorian Costume

I made my Arno costume using EVA- foam underneath the fabric for the shoulder pieces to keep them nice and straight and armor-like, I also used white textile paint to touch up some edges and weather the costume, because I think weathering is one of the most important steps in costume making.

And please like this picture on facebook, it's part of an Assassin's Creed contest I'm trying to win: https://www.facebook.com/UbisoftBel...47071723144/10152582303758145/?type=1&theater

Your weather on the coat looks really good! What technique do you use for that?

I mainly drybrushed on textile paint with a 30mm brush, making the edges pop out more and also to break up the smoothness of the fabric. then I sprayed on a little bit of water on the spots I thought were overdone with paint and rubbed part of it off using a sponge

For mine (well, for my husband's) I'm going to use cotton canvas, middle weight. It drapes well, but it's also sturdy enough to hold its shape.

Does anyone knows the type of fabric of Arno's coat??

If you can get some for a decent price, I think wool (or fake wool) would be the most realistic/accurate. Being unable to find any that I could afford, I'm using upholstery suedecloth, which is appropriately sturdy and has a beautiful color and texture. Probably not the most accurate, although it does look at least like some of the red/brown accents are suede (or something with a similar texture) in some official pieces of art.

If anyone's interested, here's my completed Arno coat, made of suedecloth, vinyl, and wool:

I am or will soon be working on his shirt, waistcoat, spats, and sword/gun belt and will be posting pics in the next couple of weeks.

Looking for an opinion on the spats. I have enough of the brownish vinyl I used on the coat to make them out of that, and I also have enough vinyl in another, much deeper burgundy color. Which should I go with? In some pictures of Arno, it looks like his spats are the same color as the leather accents on his coat, and in others, they look noticeably redder.

That's superb! What material did you use for the coat?

I don't know the name of the fabric I used but here's a close up if it helps: IMG_0520.JPG

I'm going to be remaking the costume completely since it's impractical for actual parkour. This time I'll be going for a Royal Navy Hainsworth wool fabric which was, according to my research, a very popular in the military during the battle of Waterloo. I'm not 100% sure but it might just be the perfect fabric.

I am going to try this costume out. I have started making some mockups based on patterns I am creating from scratch. The shirt I have made already, which is just a standard square cut pull-over style shirt from the time made of shirt linen. The gilet I am making from heavier brown linen, with facings of the same material then the back and lining of cheap plain calico. Because there are four layers to this costume I am going to put laces in the back of the gilet so that it can be adjusted tight (see picture). This is a typical feature of an 18th century gilet in any case. The waist coat is going to be in buff canvas, with a button-in lining of white wool flannel. The jacket will be of heavy navy wool, with a hood and shoulder covers (is that what they would be called?) of navy canvas. Wool would have been the typical fabric for the day but all that rolling around nonsense would tear it apart so I figured if I was making a real world Arno jacket I would use canvas to protect the shoulders.

I hope this won't be a slow build so I will post updates as I get them done. In the meantime, these are my first pattern drafts of the gilet and the waistcoat. If anyone has a decent pattern for the hood I would appreciate a link in any follow-ups so that I can save a bit of time.

EDIT I am also making all of the props, such as pistols, swords, flags, etc. using modded store bought toys and the like. The flag is huge and will be weathered up so that it looks all battle worn. The sword is a $3 kids' foam sword which is being covered in EVA and painted. The pistols likewise are $5 kids toys which are being puttied and painted up to look like the real deal - hopefully.

I have been working on a pattern for the jacket bodice. The skirt part should be relatively easy and I will probably just drape those when I have the bodice done. I am building the pattern in software called Valentina. Here are pictures of the drawing up and the output. I am basing the bodice design on descriptions of early 20th Century British military tunics.

Wow, I can't believe it is almost two years since I started planning to do this costume. I have several other things I am working on at the same time but I did make some progress on this costume a short while ago when I made the linen gilet. I have made it will a lace up back so that it will fit quite tight so that the other layers of the costume don't become too bulky. I haven't completed the button holes and the like yet but I am pretty happy with the pattern and fit. As I start to get more committed with this costume I will probably start my own build thread. Please excuse the female mannequin that I have hung this waistcoat on.
