Assassins Creed Tomahawk

Hi guys, hope you like this its my Assassins Creed 3 Tomahawk i got round to building this week! I must confess i haven't actually played much of the game at all but i just love how iconic this weapon is, and yes i know this isn't an exact replica (you can buy a rubber one from thinkgeek) but i wanted to create something really realistic that any assassin would still be proud to carry!

so i began using the licensed axe as a reference for a quick template for the piece (ill post the file if i remember somewhere on this thread) then built up the form of the axe in clay for molding later (the template was symmetrical so when i attached two castings together they would fit perfectly - ish)

because i was out of silicone and grey clay doesn't like to be left too long i created a mold using liquid latex as a skin to pickup details and to release the castings easily then surrounded this in plaster to create the structural mold.

the main problems with this are that, its really messy for starters, it takes a really long time to mold the piece, its not garentead to work and i only managed to get two castings from it before the mold broke, which isn't ideal, but if your on a budget there is always this method

Next i glued the half's together and spent a short eternity sanding, filling, priming and contemplating why 42 has anything to do with anything, until i had this..

but no answer to the meaning of the universe

now for some ADVICE TO NEW PROP MAKERS!!
if you have an elderly neighbor or know someone who needs some gardening done, or a family member who needs to get rid of some scrap wood, say yes! for just doing a little bit I've made it off with enough free wood to make at least 10 axe handles, for FREE! free is good! plus i waned to have as natural a feel as possible to the handles and i think it payed off!

next it was plain sailing, just hit the head with some car spray paint then went in and weathered. I took some wood stain and varnish to the handle then carved in the design onto the shaft. i split the top of the shaft and hammered a wedge in to hold the head in place (going for the whole realism thing again). and after all that i did some really simple leather work with pins, a little bit of hand stitching i didn't try to hide and a pass over with a blowtorch to weather the whole thing and this was done!
(also by plain sailing i mean i just completely forgot to photograph this part, this was like a days work, the paining alone took about 5 hours including drying times!)

and finally one awesome, fake blood splattered photo shoot later and this thing is done! hope you like it guys!
