Assassin's Creed 4: Edward Kenway

It'll still be a while before I actually start working on this, but out of boredom I started buying materials for it. First I bought the cotton canvas for the doublet:

Then came the thin cotton shirting and the perfect color blue linen for the waistcoat (I have tons of white linen left over from Altair and my friend's Prince of Persia, so hopefully one of those will work for the rest of the waistcoat):

For the pants, I looked for a while for white linen with a faint stripe, but wasn't having any luck. I found this grey/black linen at Jo-Ann and thought I might be able to use Rit color remover to leach out just enough to make it look right, but it faded out to this almost instantly, so no go.

And lastly, I just got a pair of hidden blade gauntlets. (If anybody wants just the "leather" gauntlet pieces, let me know. I'm making mine from real leather.)

My next step is collecting my flintlocks over time. Together the weapons are the most expensive part of this build.

First, I've just ordered this one, which is one of two guns that they modeled the artwork directly off of.
Italian Pirate Replica Brass Flintlock Non-Firing Gun-Replica Weaponry

I haven't been able to find the other gun they used with the dragon or lizard head on the butt. The second gun I plan to buy is here, because of it's similarities to the gun they keep sticking me with whenever they take away my golden pistols when I replay a memory, and also because it's the nicest looking of the Denix flintlocks.
Replica Colonial George Washington Flintlock Pistol Non-Firing Replica-Replica Weaponry

And the other two are different just for the variety. 4 different guns was more fun than a matching set:
Replica 18TH Century English Antique Grey Blunderbuss Non-Firing Replica-Replica Weaponry

18TH Century European Flintlock Pistol Replica-Replica Weaponry

I plan to make the blow pipe on the lathe at work and engrave it with the rotary attachment on a laser cutter, but the swords are holding me up a little. Ideally, I'd like to find real metal replicas for the hilts, but remove the blades and replace them with something con safe. Short of spending $100+ per sword, I haven't found many decent looking hilts yet.

It quickly became my favorite of the AC games. It suffers from some bad controls held over from the abysmal AC3, but they did manage to fix some things and improved the actual playability of the game tenfold. And the costume is fantastic. The complexity of the doublet and leather vest are nicely balanced with the ease of pirate basics.

That's funny you mentioned the controls. This is my first venture into the AC universe and I absolutely love it so far. Having said that, I've already had a few "rage quits" do to Edward not doing what I want. :LOL

Which model swords were you going to go with? I love the Kenway Family swords, but I'm not going to buy the McFarlane figure just for the DLC code.

I've never tried the Rit Color Remover, but have you tested that striped linen in straight bleach? Maybe it wouldn't take out so much color.

I was looking for hilts that resemble the two from the artwork, and there are some kind of similar ones out there for around $30-80 each, but I'm not willing to spend big money on pieces I probably can't bring to Dragon Con. I'd most likely have to get plastic swords or go without for that event. I don't have any particular preference though, if you know of really cheap metal generic pirate swords.

That fabric was a long shot anyway, the stripe spacing wasn't right and it was too thin. White striped linen does appear to be quite rare, though.

So right after christmas I found what I thought was a pretty good match for one of the artwork guns on ebay and bought it. It arrived really fast, but I was really disappointed when I actually saw it. After taking a look at Amazon I found the real deal from Denix, but I wanted to post this comparison picture of the Denix and it's crappy recast knockoff before I returned it.

i love the hidden blades, the pistols look great also.i hope the suit will turn up very nice.its a nice project.

what about sourcing those short wheel lock pistols you get when you expand your amount of pistol holsters?

Your fabric choices look awesome! I'm working on my own Edward Kenway at the moment as well. If you still need a skull buckle I would recommend this one, it really is the best one I could find.

I've actually found the rest of my fabrics since my last post, but I haven't had time to take pictures and post them. I actually managed to track down white herringbone linen, though. I was pretty jazzed.

That buckle looks good, but I'm going to try to get one cast from real metal. I've got the miniature rubber ones from the gauntlet toys. I'm going to do a grow mold, already have all the materials to do it. Going to grow it about 70% (might take two molds) and then make another mold, send it to a friend, and he'll do some lost wax casting for me. I'll probably have him make the belt buckle as well.

Awesome! Can't wait for this build to get some steam and see what you'll be able to with this excellent selection of fabrics!

Thanks for reminding me, here are some better pictures of all of my fabrics.

The cotton shirting:

I think it'll do very nicely, as it's thin enough to wrinkle correctly and has a subtly visible weave.

White herringbone linen for the pants:

It could be debated whether his pants are solid, striped, or herringbone, but Spanish naval uniform pants of the time were a white herringbone and it just fits too well. I also got really lucky to find a fabric this perfect and got it for a dollar.

White and french blue cotton canvas for the doublet:

Can't really say much about these, the colors and weaves read perfectly in person.

A slightly aubergine blue linen with some slight desaturation for the long waistcoat:

This picture came out a little more saturated than it reads in person, I'm 100% happy with its real color and weave.

A couple other white linens for the long waistcoat and hood (can't remember which is which):

That fabric looks fantastic. I look forward to seeing your progress. I'm working on Connor myself (just finished the coat), although yours is probably going to be way better judging by your materials.

Sourcing the fabric is pretty much my favorite part of a costume build, although as I get better at sewing I'm enjoying that more and more. With the fabrics though, the thing I like is the potential. If you find perfect fabrics, then you already know it's going to be awesome, even if you have no idea when you'll have time to make it.

I couldn't agree more!! Especially the last part. :lol

I love your choice of fabrics. Choosing a good quality and appropriate fabric really can 'lift' a costume into something spectacular.
