Art Asylum / Diamond Select TOS Phaser build with metal parts.

I really do like the fact that you are making the B/W phaser version. I had taken apart a complete red label AS phaser 1 & 2 to install some p2 electrics from a broken MR phaser, unfortunately had a RL issue and had to put it off, now its been 6 years, maybe time to get er done myself,,,, so many projects and no will to finish them :(
Thanks vidman! I completely understand about the time issue. Where does it go? :)

Awesome, Spacerone! I was so disappointed when I bought a "B&W" DST from eBay, only to discover it's the same toy, just with a white handle. But now I'm seriously psyched to convert it to a B&W hero with electronics, and maybe even a laser! Just gotta figure out where to put it in my pipeline... :)

I agree asalaw! Like adding white paint only to the handle is good enough. What were they thinking?:lol
Now that I have a good power pack I will be adding some electronics as well. Maybe a pager motor, laser etc..;)

GEDC7357.JPGI was trying to fix the type 1 phaaser aiming piece i took the phaser apart it wouldnt lock and the little spring came out cant figure out how it goes back in any help would be great.

does any one have pics of altered inside battery area in phaser 1. Where the battery acsess is glued and filled and you now have to acsess the batteries by removing the top and bottom piece to replace them?

Troydragons this is what it looks like from the inside when finished.

Came across this thread today... WOW! This definitely showcases some awesome talent and dedication to the craft. That said, I'm probably opening a can o' worms here, but... The wife and I and I are planning on ST:TOS-inspired "steampunk" outfits for an upcoming con. With that I'm searching for ideas for a steampunk'd phaser and am considering a somewhat appearance-modified AA/DST phaser (w/ metal parts from Tony, with whom I've already been in contact). In my minds eye, what I envision is a readily recognizable form (hence starting with the AA/DST model), but one that exudes the "steampunk" trademarks. As I am just conceptualizing at this point, I'm open to any suggestions/inspiration.

Cheers!

CmdrWilliamB that sounds like an interesting project.
I find it easier to start with a quick sketch and then add and remove what I want to change.
Do you have any sketches or drawings made or just looking for ideas?

Unfortunately, I have no skills whatsoever as either an artist or a modeler (disappointed sigh) as such, at this point I am crafting this in my minds eye only. For our planed garb, I want to include a communicator, phaser (both for me), and medical tricorder (for the wife). I already have a an idea (and most of the parts) for my communicator, which is actually just a dressed up back cover for my cell phone. It'll look something like this...

L39C cover_back.jpg

As to the planned phaser, no specific plans as of yet, just some thoughts that are far from concrete at this points, which include:
* Start with a DST/AA base... Fill holes and smooth ribs (to be replace by ornamental filigrees)... P2 Body to be painted a dull "antique" brass; P1 a "hammered" gunmetal gray (or visa versa)
* Replace all visible plastic parts w/ metal parts (from Tony) which have been copper electroplated
* (Removable ?) handle to be leather-bound possibly w/ wood (laminate) raised sections
* Some other added/modified steampunked do-dads as yet to be determined (ie ornamentation, faux-riveted brass banding at corners, etc)

Bottom line is that, while I don't want to stray far from the basic TOS form (so that it's readily recognizable as such), I also want to tastefully incorporate enough steampunk elements and style so as to make it just as easily recognizable.

I guess the best thing to do is start with a stripped down phaser and focus on one section at a time until you have achieved the look you want.
I would like to see how this turns out.
Maybe you should post some photos of your project for us to see and we can all comment and make suggestions as you are building it.

OMG I LOVE IT!!!!

I really enjoy steampunk, and I've seen some incredibly imaginative builds and costumes. I think your design rocks!!!

Here's a steampunk Borg my Starfleet shipmates and I ran into at the Ren Fest in Maryland:

A few thousand sandpaper strokes later and I now have a smooth aspirator surface.:D
Now to find paint that sticks to an aluminum metal surface.:unsure

I'm so sorry, but I have to say it...

SHINY!!! :p

Thx! Still needing a couple of components to complete this very simple project... (1) 45-50mm (1.75-2.0") flat copper/brass gear (beneath the moire bezel) and gem/mounts (probably will utilize flat-bottom rhinestones atop either flat or recessed brass dimple washers. After assembly, I'll move on to the phaser project.

Hi all im thinking of building a rechargeing docking station for my hero phaser im building , like the one in the picture. Phasers are not charged just in a storage area, extra batterie packs on eather side will be in charging docks .Here's my question my hero like all heros has 2 aaa = 3 volt batteries in series in the removable handle , all wall rechargers have the chargeing in parallel i wan't to keep the batteries in the handle soP56_18_PhaserLocker_Galileo7.jpg , is there a way to use the rechargers alter them so you can still have the timers and change the output of volts to 6 volts becouse 2 aaa batteries in series that = 3 volts need 6 volts to charge them.? or is there any electrical wizards on hear that would be able to create such a charger for me on a test stand and send me scamatics on it . Heres my thoughts on a desighn for charging dock for just one batterie handle pack. ...each dock would charge its own handle each dock would have 1 red led that indicates charging and 1 green to indicate when its done and it would stop charging that one , but other ones in the multy dock would keep charging and have indicaters on them and shut off when there done as well . Just thinking abought what it would take to build the station at this point but i am wondering abought electrical aspect of it now . any help would be awesome.

Here's an update on my phaser build .Tony from Federationphaser is doing lazer install and pager motor, side dial ,rear dial and pass threw for me..18 metal parts on p2.jpg19 screw on p2.jpg20 inside p2 front end.jpg21 inside p2 back end.jpg22 blue led.jpg23 window cut out for p2.jpg

Tony is also altering the phaser 1 so when it sits in its phaser 2 cradle the led for phaser 1 doesn't go off and shine threw new cutaway opening as you can see in last photo in preveiouse post but works perfictly when the 2 phasers are seperated..

to answer your question about charging the batts. , if they are Ni-Mh or Ni Cad rechargeable batts you can charge them in series at 3v not 6v, the only batts that are different and require special charging procedures are the Li Ion and Li Poly .

hope that helps ;)
