Art Asylum / Diamond Select TOS Phaser build with metal parts.

Sorry, forgot the top. The power buttons are clear round sections, with no numbers.
Thanks again Robn1! The picture is a little out of focus but it will have to do I guess. Do you know If the bottom of the handle has the same set up with screws and butterfly opening?

Sorry about the pic, I had to crop and enlarge that image. I can only assume the handle detail is the same, but this pic (also small) looks different. Can't tell if it's the hero or crap model. Also note that the rear setting knob is shorter than seen on most replicas, about half as high as on the one Karl posted.

Yeah I was just about to post Good Kirk's phaser handle from Enemy Within. :lol

Big honking slotted screw on the bottom there, no butterfly cutout.

Enemy Within also gives us the only shot in the entire series of a phaser one being snapped into the phaser pistol body. Unfortunately in context it seems like the director has mistaken the p1 for the weapon's power pack. :(

Not also that it's a hero prop, with light up emitter.

As to how accurate Jein's Worldcon phaser was... frankly to me it looks pretty rough. I would not copy any specific details from that one unless they appeal to you personally. You can probably glean enough information from screencaps.

Note also that the Black and White's p2 body is virtually identical to the midgrade "dummy" body used later in the series. So you can use reference on the grays "midgrade" to inform your B&W as well.

Thanks phase pistol! The more photos of the B&W phaser I can get the more it will make it possible to construct it correctly. Just not 100% on the measurements of the p1 plastic buttons and p2 aluminum piece above the fins.

Bunch more shots of Jein's BW. The tan phaser belt and the power pack (seen only in "Omega Glory") are probably real.

Hi,
I’ve just finished a couple of Art Asylum upgrades I thought I’d share with you.
All the replacement metal parts are from federationphaser.
On both of them I cut the handle off and reattached it after painting. This is so I could get rid of the join line. I glued some brass channel inside the handle to give it some weight. This together with the metal parts give the phasers a nice feel.
On the black phaser the knob at the back is a bit cut off an aluminium modelling knife. The finns are just layers of plastic card. Because the phaser 1 has no wheel to adjust the settings, it’s locked on maximum. The overload setting still works though.
I’m working on another one at the moment, I’m probably going to opt for an all grey one this time.
James.

Hey James what did you use to construct the fins on the black and white phaser? What kind of plastic card?

beautiful work all, considering upgrading my AA as a next project.....well actually not considering anymore, your work has inspired me!

Welcome aboard Rikarus! I'm going to start my build of a black and white phaser as soon as I get all my parts together for it. I will start posting pictures of my progress soon. If you need help with your phaser just ask, plenty of people here that can help.

Here are the best caps of B&W phasers.

Does anyone know if the rare dial on the black and white phaser sits on top of the lines at the back end or is it flush with the body and sunk below the lines?:confused It's hard to tell in the photos but it looks like it can be both ways depending on which episode you look at. It looks like they changed the phaser on a weekly basis.

The fins are styrene sheet. I’m not sure what thickness, I think it’s 30 thou.
Thanks! Your fins look good.:thumbsup I just grinded down the one that was on the Art Asylum phaser. Looks ok but I may try to get the six fins look later.

I’ve just finished another upgrade. It’s basically the same as the first grey phaser I did, except for the colour scheme.

Tobor beautiful job :thumbsup Now thats a variety of phaser colors everyone should have in their arsenal. What color black did you use?

Hi spacerone,
The paints I used are car spray paints from Halfords here in the UK.
The black is just satin black, the grey is grey primer. For the handles I used Ford Roman Bronze and Ford Diamond White. The Grey P1 is Rover Tempest Grey.
I use them straight from the cans, but I put the final coat of lacquer on with an air brush.

My parts from Tony should be on their way soon! Spent the day disassembling my phaser and getting things ready.

How are you guys separating the plastic sliver 10-turn ring from the black knob to replace it with the metal one?

You have to pull them apart, the original part is three pieces. The black piece, number dial and the stem. Sometimes they can be tough to take apart. Be careful not to break the stem you will need to reuse it after altering it. This is what it looks like taken apart.

Cool, thanks for the help! Mine does not seem to want to budge, so I'm soaking it in some hot water to soften the plastic.
