Art Asylum / Diamond Select TOS Phaser build with metal parts.

Hey Spacer, do you have a 2009 JJphaser? I just got one off Ebay for $10, and I'll scuff it up some to make it look right.
Make no mistake, I love the TOS ones SO much more, but colour me a nutty Trek fanatic- I have the Playmates JJprise, so I figure I need the assault-lookin' phaser as well.
Don't hate me for kinda likin' the new movie, eh?:eek

Considering this is -exactly- what I've been looking to make for awhile now, I hope it's not out of line to ask here. *winces*

But how hard/expensive are these sort of modifications to the Art Asylum / Diamond Select TOS Phaser? I gather that the re-painting and minor modifications are probably just time consuming and not too expensive, but can someone with no previous electronic skills wire one up to fire a green laser without too much pain? Or should I stick to hoping to find one in the junkyard one day?

Once again, hope it's not out of line asking here. :)

No, I don't have that phaser, it never real caught my attention. I like the original series phaser best. When you get it put up a photo of it, I would like to see it.

I also just got a Playmates TOS phaser as my midgrade.:lol

I think I might need an intervention here..... :confused

If you plan on building the phaser with the laser it will be time consuming. The body modification for the metal parts to fit and painting takes the most time. If you have some experience with electronics you should be able to pull it off yourself. If not you can always contact Tony at federationphaser and ask him to build you one, but you may have to wait a while. He also has the metal parts you will need if you plan on doing it yourself.

That phaser was good when it first came out back then, but the AA/DS phaser puts it to shame now.:lol But if your building a phaser collection you have got to add it for its effort.

If you like the JJ phaser...you should really pick up the QMx prop replica ($45-50 bucks)...it's static but pretty awesomje looking, and has great weight to it...feels like the real thing, and a really nice display stand. I know some guys over at TPZ modded them to make the nozzle flip around.
I have the playmates one too, sound effects are alright, but man is it cheaply built.

It can be pretty spendy to acquire all of the metal parts, unless you have some connections (friends with lathes, etc). Tony at Federation Phaser sells the metal parts, but again, not cheap...around $100 for an all metal conversion, plus add in costs of the phaser, laser, paint, etc.

I would say that at least intermediate to advanced modeling skills are needed for just the re-paint and metal conversion...with keeping all of the electronics intact.
I think you should be really confident with electronics to do a laser install.

Installing the laser was out of my realm...so I went with a commissioned build. I may buy a cheapo laser though and try to mod a playmates or Rubies to up my skill level.

Good luck and there are plenty here and over at Trek Prop Zone that are more than willing to help out!

Try 200 plus For all metal conversion. Tonys parts are first class and well worth every cent.
Thanks Spacerone, Tonys hooking me up with the emitter tip.

BATMANN your welcome! I can't wait to get the rest of the parts
I need and see how it all looks together. :)

Hey, my phaser collection is growing:

This doesn't include my Son's black handle phaser, my NG Insurrection one, or those I've not opened .

This type 1 was a resin garage kit someone made to sell at a convention back in the 80's:

For YEARS it was my only phaser, and it still looks pretty good, even if some of the measurements are slightly off (it's 5/16 of an inch too long).

Nice collection Chris, except for that chromed abomination :lol

The resin P1 looks good, much like the mid/stunt P1s.

Heh heh, I knew it'd get that reaction for some here.
I've come to appreciate it a bit though, and for $7 I had to have it.
It reminds me of the Trek V assault phaser... only shiny.

Yeah, back in the day I was AMAZED by it- enough to dump $25 (lot of dough in the Reagan years) on it. LOL, I actually used the $25 I got selling my cardboard Stormtrooper blaster to a another conventioneer, now that I think of it.:lol

Actually, I see no reason to update the TOS phaser at all, but if I were charged with designing a new streamlined one, it'd look a bit more like this:

Sorry, it's crude, I just dashed it off this minute.:lol

^^^
That is a very cool design! It looks like you might have designed a rotating emitter on the front as well?
I have the QMx version of the JJ phaser and it's grown on me a bit...hey I like shiny things:$
I did think that the rotating stun/kill emitter was pretty sweet.

Still could've been designed with much more homage to the original, even just keeping the original sounds would have been a nice touch.

One can never have enough phasers.

Sounds like the beginings of a new contest to me. " Redesign the JJ Trek Phaser" {please}:rolleyes Nice looking design, better than what they used in the movie. Would like to see what you come up with when you spend some time on it.:love Didn't mean to go off topic, Spacerone, good luck with your build, can't wait to see the finished Phaser. The work you have done already looks Fantastic.:love:love
